One of my local book clubs is reading The first Veronica Speedwell book soon. It feels too soon for a reread, but I’ve read 50++ books since then, and I don’t want to inadvertently spoil the second book. So I’ll just grin and bear it. 😁
The start of a new series by Raybourn, who writes the Veronica Speedwell mystery series. I will have to be honest and say that Veronica has my vote for which of the two I enjoyed the most, but this new story and characters have potential.
Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie have been employed for 40 years by a clandestine agency known as The Museum. Plucked from their lives at a young age they were formed as an all female team, trained to be some of the deadliest assassins in the world. The world has changed since their entry into the organization and retirement has come to them. The Agency gives to them a gift of a cruise. What starts out as a reunion of the four, with time to relax, turns into a job when they spot a young colleague on the ship and realize that person is there to exterminate them.
This was a fun read, but you need to be able to embrace "not likely to happen" in your reading. The women are strong, each with a unique personality. Raybourn included some of their back story, but there is a lot she did not tell. Leaving this story wide open for future episodes. Because of so much of their past being left out it was hard to embrace any of the characters. Raybourn is good with dead-pan banter and there were a lot of laughs and smiles for me.
I will pick up the next book when it is written, with hopes of really making the connections with women I can relate to.
