Don Incognito As far as I know, a Cardinal is a very high-ranking Roman Catholic priest; so I have no idea why Richelieu in The Three Musketeers is called the Cardinal. Was that also the title of the French prime minister at that time, which Richelieu is?

Igenlode Wordsmith Richelieu was both a French Cardinal and the chief minister of France (and holds the rank of Duc de Richelieu - that's his title, not his personal name).
Like Thomas à Becket in England, he is a politician-priest.
