This is the thread for our May/June 2024 Group Read with Guest Author, Dan Franklin. Dan’s book, These Things Linger, is part of FB’s Books Of Horror 2024 Indie Horror Author Brawl.

I just started reading it and it has been such a long day I kept passing out. Will get more read tomorrow. Haven't read enough to form an opinion.

This book is outstanding - one of my top 3 reads this year. Can't wait to see the conversation.

It was a slow burn for me, and though I felt that the writing was excellent and had the ring of realism, the content just was not resonating with me. It was obviously an occult yarn but I was persevering to read the pages. Then, it was farther along in the book when Lex looked up his old girlfriend for advice. No spoilers. It is about that point when the narrative goes from mildly interesting to Oh. my god!!! I was turning pages as fast as I ever have. The horror only loomed larger and more threatening like a severe thunderstorm and then they call a tornado warning. I rated the book 4 Stars which it certainly deserves. My book review will be posted Sunday. Really was a fooler and shockingly good scare the hell out of you horror.

A big thanks to Dan Franklin for being generous with his time. The book is an excellent read.

Started this last night when I had a little time. The next thing I knew, I was a third of the way through it and could’ve stayed up all night. This is really good writing, Dan. The word choices are impeccable and breathe so much life into this tale. I feel like I’m on the lake in the middle of the night in a leaky boat.

The boat scene was great - one of many excellent scenes. There's some real vivid intensity to this book.

It goes a bit sideways around the halfway point haha. But hopefully in a fun* way!

I liked writing the boat scene, even if the inspiration for the lake is packed with Canadian geese which are absolutely more daunting than any haunting

I'll say- my favorite scene is in the middle where we see our protagonist's attempt to get help play out. "Fun" IS a word that could be used to describe it, though I can think of other better words that would risk spoiling the story!

I realized that I haven't posted any comments even though I read the book this month with the group.

I wanted to let you know that my favorite part of the book when when you described the lake at night as shiny like a black plastic garbage bag. That image has stuck with me for several weeks now!
