The Fellowship of the Ring
question
A journey in the dark (Moria), most terrifying part of the series?

To me, the fellowship's journey through Moria is one of the best parts of the book. It is wonderful and terrifying at the same time. The tension just keeps mounting; starting from the keeper in the pool shutting the western gates behind them to the fight with the Balrog. The book captures the feelings of grandeur and ruin that is Moria in a way that the movies couldn't do justice to. The fear of being in a place that nobody has been to in a long time(though admittedly Balin's group and orcs were possibilities) but also the fear of not being the only creatures there... its just done so well. The journal in the chamber of Mazarbul was heartbreaking, followed by the even worse fall of Gandalf into the depths with the Balrog. This part of the book gave me literal chills.
Sorry for the looooong recap and would love to know how others felt upon reading these chapters.

I agree. Their journey in Moria is one of my favorite parts in The Fellowship of the Ring. I don't think I even put the book down once while reading that part.
