5.6 Outside We Go!

National Play Outside Day is celebrated on the first Saturday of every month, National Play Outside Day is a monthly reminder to step away from the screens and spend some time engaging our brains and bodies in the great outdoors.

Read a book that features an outside activity e.g. camping, skiing, swimming, hiking, etc.
The outdoor activity does not need to be present in the entire book but must be essential to the story, for example a book about ski trip.

Required: If the outdoor activity is not evident from the Goodreads main page, provide a reference.

She is watching from her home, I can't tell from the sample or the description if she is actually making and activity outside out of this. She could just be watching from her window or as she comes and goes. So I would say this would not work.

Lauren (laurenjberman) Indigo Lake (Ransom Canyon #6) by Jodi Thomas - is one episode of horseback riding in the book enough or does it have to be an extended part of the plot like a cattle drive?

its needs to be central to the storyline.

Please verify that Urn Burial by Kerry Greenwood works.
According to the description: our main character and a group of others are "holidaying at Cave House, a Gothic mansion in the heart of Australia's Victorian mountain country". During the book, this group participate in a number of outdoor activities, including horseback riding ("lethal traps are set" has to do with a wire across a riding path; Phryne avoids it, but who was it planned for?) and exploring in caves ("deep into... the limestone Buchan caves"). Other suspects/victims/detectives also fish, take walks in the woods, etc.

Lisa Hickman (lbhick) | 1527 comments Would this work? It's a mystery surrounding the death of a camper in an area known for hiking and camping.

Movieland (Eve Ronin, #4) by Lee Goldberg

Would this worK? A hiker goes missing in on a national park trail, which leads to deadly history of the past.

Shelterwood by Lisa Wingate

Missing hiker. Search party attempts to locate her, also gets lost and chased through the forest. 70% of book takes place in the forest.

GR book description mentions the hiker and search party.

Is this acceptable?

I was just checking if this would work for this task, as it sounds from the description like she's outside a lot in her travels.

this one I feel it doesn't say that an outside activity is part of the story or happens in the story.

the second one sounds like it works.

Michelle (michellesoleil) | 361 comments Hi! Could you please confirm this would work before I finalize it in my reading plan? Thanks. :)

Come Away with Me by Karma Brown

An excerpt from the GR blurb:

"One minute, Tegan Lawson has everything she could hope for: an adoring husband, Gabe, and a baby on the way. The next, a patch of black ice causes a life-altering, devastating accident. Tegan is consumed by grief—not to mention anger toward Gabe, who was driving on the night of the crash.

Just when she thinks she's hit rock bottom, Gabe reminds her of their Jar of Spontaneity, a collection of their dream destinations, and so begins an adventure of a lifetime. From the bustling markets of Thailand to the flavors of Italy to the ocean waves in Hawaii, Tegan and Gabe embark on a journey to escape the tragedy and search for forgiveness."

this one is hard to say, I can't tell if any outside activity is central to the story or it just the main character travelling.

Main character is a park ranger, and almost the entire book takes place outside in a national park.

The task is for an outside activity to be central to the story, not just an outside setting. So if hiking or camping is central to the story then it works.
