I've been eyeing the 12 Caesars. But I think I won't be able to read it before the hangout. I think there's a translation by Robert Graves (you know, this month's author) of it.
I'd recommend Steven Saylor's books. It's basically Sherlock Holmes in ancient Rome. Even though it's fiction, he's a history professor and does a lot of research for his books. Very good reads.

I'd recommend Bryan Ward-Perkins' The Fall of Rome: And the End of Civilisation - it's non-fiction, set a long time after the reign of Claudius. It presents a compelling alternative view to the traditional decadent, disease and Visigoth riddled collapse.
Also, Suetonius' Twelve Caesars, and the fun and filthy Satyricon commonly ascribed to Petronius.
