I hadn't read Coben before, but I've watched several of the Netflix adaptations of his stories and liked them, so I was looking forward to my first venture into his written space. Unfortunately, this didn't take off for me as I'd hoped, and I found it difficult to get into. I never developed an attachment for any of the characters, and while I didn't mind reading the story while I was actively reading it, it never grabbed me enough to compel me to come back to it. It was like I had to remind myself that I hadn't finished it yet.
One other (possibly minor?) annoyance is that there were a handful of times when the author would direct a comment at the audience, outside of any of the characters doing/saying something. It was weird and seemed disjointed.
I do want to try another Coben at some point; maybe this was a fluke and I'll enjoy something else. But I was disappointed---I set my expectations too high for this one.
