A university press book (University of California) but not by a professor for a college audience, by an innocence project lawyer for a general audience. It's clear and short. Each chapter is a reason an innocent person might go to prison, illustrated by relevant cases and summaries of policy changes. The cover is stark and intimidating, but despite the stories of innocent people in prison for years, a lot of the causes of their incarceration are being addressed... though some are still a problem, and older causes are making a comeback.
Some chapters:
You Hired the Wrong Lawyer (Pleas With No Bargain) You (Kind of) Look like Other People in the World You Get Confused When You Are Tired and Hungry, and People Yell At You You Got a Jury That Was Blinded by "Science"
