I am starting to purge books from the bookshelf shelved by the authors themselves. I wrote about this earlier and asked for thoughts. No one commented for or against. It will probably take a week or two to purge all of them. With all the deleting and such, it now makes me prove about every minute that I'm not a robot.
I still encourage techno-thriller authors to tell us about their books, by posting in the Author/Book Self Promotions folder, but want to keep only consensus high-quality books on the bookshelf, so that techno-thriller fans will not be turned off by self-promotion and not join the group. I've avoided groups like that myself. Some of these books did get decent ratings, but ... as evidenced by the number of ratings, ultimately did not catch on.
I'm all going to purge anything with less than 1000 ratings, unless it is a book (likely a yet to be published book) by a well-known author, which I'll define as an author who has received at least 10,000 ratings on a prior book, with an average rating of at least 3.75 (not a high bar). So, Eruption by Michael Crichton is a book I've shelved in advance of its release, that had maybe 3 (bogus/pre-publication) ratings when I added to the to-read shelf, but of course Michael Crichton arguably defined/popularized the technothriller genre. Same with Extinction by Douglas Preston. Both blockbuster authors.
I will, however, post about each purged book/author here to keep their legacy alive. We do appreciate posts about such books. It takes tremendous time to write books and courage to publish under your real name. Do post them. Maybe, some of us will read them and post back a positive review, and then it will catch on here in that manner.
