Welcome Team Elephantopus

I'm excited for this challenge :) I am going with the suggestion that we start with creating a team name and seeing if anyone wants to be scorekeeper or help in other ways - any other ways LOL. I'm fine doing it, but please don't be shy of you would like to do more.

I'm saving a few spots below until I see what info we may need to add or tack to the top of the page. I will also be sending you friends requests. You may just add me for the challenge if you prefer. I am starting a bookshelf under CF - Gish 2024, if anyone needs access to my info. I haven't played this challenge before, but I'm prepared to jump into the deep end.

I'm adding a quick hello. I'm from MN and have 4 dogs and manage a busy sports bar attached to a sports complex.

I will read most genres, especially for a challenge!

The Greatest International Scavenger Hunt II
Duration: June 10 through August 4

For TCF's GISH Scavenger Hunt, you have one week to read one book for a task from that week's list. Each task is worth points. You won't find out each task's points until after every team has reported their Completion Posts.

The team with the most points wins.

Team 1

Christine Captain
Severina
Brittany
Louise
Nora

How to Play:
* Each team member will need to read one book each week.
* The book must match a task from that week's list.
* Books must be at least 140 pages. Audio book page length is determined by the first paper version that shows up.

How to get points:
1. Read a book for a GISH task. There will be 26 tasks each week.
You may not start reading your book before Monday morning (12:01 am, your time)
and
you must finish reading your book and report it by Sunday night (midnight, your time).

Each task gets points. The points may be higher if the task is trickier. The difficulty of the reading prompt does not reflect the points given to the task. (I did not assign the points to the tasks. That was done by GISH people.)

2. If the book you're reading fits a second GISH task, you can claim those points as well. (The connection must be obvious. If you're unsure if your book fits, check with your teammates. If you're still not confident, ask on the Q&A thread.)

3. Buddy read a book for a GISH task. This is worth 50 points.

***You can add 2 and/or 3 to the mandatory 1 for additional points.***

Team members can read the same task. Points for the previous week's tasks will be announced when everyone's Completion Posts are reported. Tasks will be posted each Friday morning.

If a team member has scheduled an absence, someone else on the team can match their book up to 4 different tasks so as not to miss points.

If someone misses two deadlines, they will be removed from the game.

Details:
*Teams will be posted Wednesday, June 5.
*There will be 8 'Weeks' to the game.
*Week 1's tasks will be posted Friday, June 7.
*The game will begin on Monday, June 10 at 12:01 a.m. (your time)
*The game will conclude Sunday, Aug 4 at 12:59 p.m. (your time)
*If your profile is set to private, you will need to open it for the duration of the game. You may need to be contacted by the head of your team and there are a few tasks where your teammates will need to see your bookshelves.

sample Completion post:
Book and Author:
Date Read:
Pages:
GISH task: #?
2nd GISH task: #?

Upton | 243 comments Welcome Nora! Lovely to see another Midwest girl on Goodreads :)

message 8: by Severina (new)

Severina | 500 comments Hi, all. I'm Severina. I'm from Ontario, Canada and I work from home doing (mostly) legal transcription.

My favourite genre is post-apocalyptic or dystopia, but I'll read just about anything that looks interesting. I also love love love finding interesting stories told from animal or unexpected POVs, like the Chet & Bernie series (told through Chet's POV, a dog).

I'm horrible at coming up with names so I'm happy with whatever you guys come up with.

Looking forward to the challenge!

message 9: by Upton (new)

Upton | 243 comments Welcome Severina! I would say those are two of my favorite genres as well. I bet we have read a lot of the same books.

Have you read Mark Tufo? His The Book of Riley 1 The Book of Riley 1 (The Book of Riley, #1) by Mark Tufo series combine those two genres together. I would recommend them if you are okay with Zombies :)

Any names come to mind when you look at the images/logos?
Lanelle is using the Porcupanda :)

Update: I removed the other images to shorten the chat area.

Single mom of a teen boy, and 4 rescue children. Plott Hound, mini Dauchshund, Maine Coon mix, and a Domestic Medium Hair Cat

I will read most things once, but my fav genres are Speculative Fiction, Good Psych Thrillers, True Crime, Biography, History, Contemporary.

Hobbies: Sports & Nature Photography, Recipe Creation, Writing/Editing, PC Gaming, finding random new hobbies to fill any spare second.

I know nothing about GISH, except that it was a reading challenge, so I signed up ahahah

Nora Currie I meant that the Sqroose was cute too!

message 17: by Upton (new)

Upton | 243 comments Hi Brittany! Welcome to the group. GISH was originally a HUGE creative treasure hunt created by one of the actors on the show Supernatural. It will be interesting to see how it works as a reading challenge.

Any thoughts on a name?

those are all so great, Christine. and thanks for the rec! zombies are my favourite scariest thing so I will definitely check that book out!

message 21: by Upton (new)

Upton | 243 comments I would start with Zombie Fallout. It is the first book in the series and there are a lot of books in the series. Book of Riley is a spin off a number of books into the series. If you don't want any spoilers, I would start at the very beginning. Just my take on it :) I know some people don't care.

As a side question - Is anyone a whiz at spreadsheets? I can probably find one to use and I know enough to be dangerous, but that is about it.

Or we can post here in the thread and go from there. That was my first thought as we can only read for up to 1-2 task each and we can duplicate the tasks.

Thoughts?

And don't forget Buddy reads count for an extra 50 points. buddy Reads sign up thread -

Severina | 500 comments Yay, prompts are up!

I am planning to read The Gates by John Connolly. It fits 4 or five prompts, but I will probably use MC under 30 (MC is 11 years old) and MC has a pet (he has a dachshund.)

(It works out good because this one was also on my To Read list this month because it was a pick in the Dusty Bookshelf challenge -- it's been on my bookshelf since September when I got it at a library book sale.)

Brittany McCann (brittanylmccann) | 378 comments It was hard to pick out the tasks, I needed to see them hahaha

message 39: by Upton (new)

Upton | 243 comments You guys are awesome! Thank you Brittany for posting the tasks :) I had a group of hangry dogs to feed a garden to water.

I don't know if we need a spreadsheet. I did find one I used before that I could modify if we would like to use it.

The only reason it might be nice not to duplicate tasks is that we don't know what the high value tasks are. The more we can cover is likely for the better. Or if people want to read for a same book, we could also do a buddy read. We could still cover multiple tasks, like Servina has one that covers 4 or 5 prompts.

I can get my hands on the book if you are interested in doing that, but no pressure!

7. Read a book where the MC is a grandparent OR under 30 years old

20. Read a book that is tagged 'Adventure'

25. Read a book that is not a WOMBAT (a Waste of Money, Batting and Time), it must be on the BOOKS THAT WON'T WASTE YOUR TIME list (#64)

message 41: by Upton (new)

Upton | 243 comments A couple of interesting questions came up...I read them to see if anything stood out and it did!

Each person that participates in the buddy read will earn an extra 50 points.

Page counts do not matter. They need to be at least 140 pages long. Other than that, longer reads do not make seem to make a difference

Sorry - I missed the 1 in 17 :)

I found a free copy of Bigfoot Hunters Bigfoot Hunters (Tales of the Crypto-Hunter, #1) by Rick Gualtieri for task #21 & #22

But I would like to find a book with 3 P's in the title and maybe tagged "adventure". I'm thinking of tasks that might be higher points.

Update - I found a book with 3 p's that also has a 3 and 0 in the page count, is a paperback, and has the person's first name in the title. I'll probably go in that direction.
