It’s time for the next Monthly Reading Wrap Up! This Month I Read…
With a Little Luck by Marissa Meyer- This is a follow up to another one of her novels, Instant Karma. The leads in each novel are twins and each find themselves with a mystical ability. In this books case Jude ends up with otherworldly good luck. In the first book his twin Prudence wasn’t the most likable character for me and the book was definitely my least favorite Marissa Meyer novel (and I’ve read them all). This one was a lot better than the first. Jude is a much more likable character that you want to root for and does a good amount of growing throughout the story. His story starts with him getting an amazing streak of luck and seemingly gets everything he has always dreamed of. He slowly realizes after things start to fall apart that maybe that wasn’t what he wanted after all. I love the way he is able to realize not only what he thought he wanted wasn’t what he thought he wanted but that it was right there in front of him the whole time. I also liked that he had to build his courage to go after what he wanted on his own without his otherworldly good luck. I still Marissa Meyer writes full fantasy much better, but this one was much better than its predecessor.
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby VanPelt- I loved this one. A book about an older lady who works nights cleaning an aquarium and the octopus that live there seems a little odd at first, but there is so much more to this book. I loved how it brought together several different points of view and slowly started making the connections between them. It mainly centers around Tova and Cameron. Tova is the aforementioned older lady working at the aquarium and Cameron is a down on his luck young adult who comes to town. Tova is at a turning point and feeling alone with no remaining living relatives and trying to figure out what's next and Cameron is on a journey of his own. Their stories intertwine in the most beautiful way with the Octopus pulling strings in its own way. Wonderful writing, characters, and storytelling. I highly recommend this one.
