I've read 20 of these and of the ones I haven't read, none are jumping out either. I will have to check out my resources. I own Typical and Dictionary

message 3: by George P. (new)

George P. | 725 comments I've read 16, about my usual 1/3. Three are in my TBR list in my next 100, and a couple more farther down. Those 3 are: Here's to You Jesusa [if you read Spanish it's “Hasta no Verte, Jesus Mio"], Exercises in Style, and Quartet. So those are the ones for which I'm inclined to vote.

I don't read Spanish and was not able to find a translation. I've read the other two.

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Here's to you Jesusa is here in English on open library for anyone who may be interested in that one. This is how I read it and thought highly of it: https://openlibrary.org/works/OL15858...

There's only 2 I haven't read this time: Vernon God Little and Life: a user's manual. The former I have coming to my library to read this month so that makes things easy for me. Just going to throw 5 votes at Life: a user's Manual.

Rosemary | 713 comments I own Excellent Women and Things: A Story of the Sixties. Also Vineland, but not sure I'm ready for another Pynchon yet.
I haven't read Typical, Dictionary of the Khazars, or Here's to You Jesusa, but I've read the others mentioned so far.
Not sure what to do yet.

message 8: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I have read 18 and don’t own a copy of any of the others. In fact, my TBR shelf is shrinking satisfactorily. I shall vote for Jesusa.

message 9: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 592 comments I’ve read 14 (including Life: A Users Manual which was brilliant), but nothing is standing out from the unread ones in this group. I think I may give voting a miss this month and wait to see what gets chosen.

I've read 26 of them, probably helped by the fact that I have read all the Perec and Poe, as well as two of eligible Pynchons. A bit light on the TBR shelf though:

- Dictionary of the Khazars (Pavic, French edition)
- Gormenghast (Peake)
- Titus Groan (Peake)

I'm craving something in French, especially after the gruelling bricks I have read (and still read) these last few months. So, very likely to back the Dictionary quite heavily.

message 11: by George P. (new)

George P. | 725 comments Dictionary of the Khazars is a little farther down in my to-read list. It's a "core" 1001 book and my local library has it so while I might not vote for it I would read if chosen. According to my notes it's one of just two Serbian books in the 1001 list- don't know what the other is.

I liked Excellent Women. I haven't read the other two.

message 13: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments I have read 14 of these, about my average although I was certainly helped a great deal by the Poe being considered three distinct reads. I would like to read A User's Manual so will probably vote for that.

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
The winner by popular vote is [Life: A User's Manuel] beating out The Dictionaries by 1 vote, Thank you, Gail.

The winner of the randomizer selection goes to Amanda Carter who voted for Bell Jar.

What will you be reading in August?

message 15: by Patrick (new) - added it

Patrick Robitaille | 1602 comments Mod
I have read both, so it will be an opportunity to finish Joseph and his Brothers. If I'm lucky, I might be able to start reading my randomised picks.

message 16: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (bibliohound) | 592 comments I have also read both so will pick one off my randomizer list to read alongside the TBR takedown and a BOTM.

Kristel (kristelh) | 5131 comments Mod
I have not read Life so will be buying a used copy of that one. I have read The Bell Jar a long time back. I own it, will consider a possible reread but more likely I will work on other books, I seldom reread.

message 18: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1679 comments Glad Life: a user's manual was votes in. will be reading that one. I thought The Bell Jar was brilliant, so hope those reading that one enjoy it too.

message 19: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2173 comments I will be reading both. I read The Bell Jar long ago and am not sure I will finish rereading it but I will at least start it.

message 20: by Rosemary (last edited Jul 29, 2024 01:18PM) (new)

Rosemary | 713 comments I've read both. I'm planning to read Henry James' The Golden Bowl in August, plus my TBR Takedown book whatever that may be, and the monthly keyword challenge book. Oh and part 3 of Joseph, which looks long.

message 21: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments I’ll definitely read the Perez, but it’s a big book so I might not get to a re-read of the Plath. I need to revisit it, though, because I did not find it as marvellous as others have on previous readings.

I feel the same Pip. I am sad that Life is a big book as I am struggling to get so many of these done that don't have audios and too many pages.

message 23: by Pip (new) - rated it 5 stars

Pip | 1822 comments Yes! I am listening to Mason and Dixon and it is never ending! On the plus side I really enjoyed Jane Somers and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes this month.

George P. | 725 comments Pip wrote: "I’ll definitely read the Perez..."

I guess you meant Perec.

message 25: by George P. (last edited Jun 24, 2024 04:44PM) (new)

George P. | 725 comments I've read both of the selections this month. Like Kristel I rarely re-read, though I am planning to re-read One Hundred Years of Solitude this year which I read probably 30+ years ago.
I'm working on Sophie's Choice which is 500+ pages (audiobk) and the new biography King: A Life (680 pages, also audiobk) and will soon start A Strangeness in my Mind which is 600 pages. These aren't list books but are good books. Plus I have a few shorter ones I'm working on.

Pip | 1822 comments Yes, George , damn autocorrect, I didn’t see it!

Dictionary was tough. I understand why it's on the list, purely for the form, but toughhh.

I've owned it for a long time and have not read it. It sounds like it will be a challenge to read.
