Hi, everyone! This is the thread for the "Commit to one book monthly" challenge. In this thread, post one book you intend to read in May, so everyone else can see your pick. When you finish reading it, we'd love for you to come back and post your opinion. I expect everyone's TBRs to suffer because of this monthly reading challenge, but I'm prepared to make that sacrifice. Are you? :-D

I have no idea why I think this challenge is so portentous, but I find myself choosing more serious reads here, when really it's dealer's choice.

Anyway: My pick for July -- The Death of a President: November 20-November 25, 1963, coming in at a whopping 33 hours on audio. :)

Jackie | 1103 comments Jennifer,

I read that book in college and wrote a compare and contrast paper with another tome - can't think of the other book right now (it's been a few years ago LOL). Now I'll be trying to remember the other book!

Jackie | 1103 comments The Swimmers by Julie Otsuka

I actually ended up reading this in August. The focus went from the different swimmers to the one with dementia. It touched me on several levels.

Bonnie | 705 comments I'll commit to Winter Lost (Mercy Thompson, #14; Mercy Thompson World, #20) by Patricia Briggs since it's waiting at the library and I bet Fantasy is going to be our monthly genre based on poll.

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 231 comments I will commit to finishing Death's End by Liu Cixin. I started it on June 19 but, being 604 pages and kind of a dense read, is taking me awhile to read!

Read and OK, not great. Nice to "see" some old favorite characters anyway.

I just started mine. It's a tome: 700 pgs OR 33 hours audible...

Finished The Death of a President November 1963 by William Manchester which was exhaustive but not exhausting. William Manchester has a way of writing nonfiction that makes you forget it's nonfiction. His The Glory and the Dream A Narrative History of America 1932-72 by William Manchester should be required reading.

Eileen | 353 comments Finished The Intern by Michele Campbell 5 stars

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 231 comments Finished Death's End. That was a long and very scientific (lots of physics that I don't understand) SF read, #3 in the The Three Body Problem trilogy. I really liked the first 1/3 of the book but it got to be too much for me and then the ending was bizarre. It's not like anything I've ever read! Very interesting ideas but it was not an easy read for me. I think the author tried to do too much with this book. I preferred the 2nd one. Once I finished the 2nd book, I felt like I HAD to read the 3rd. That's how it is with series! I haven't rated it yet but will probably give it 4 stars. (5 for imagination and world-building but 3 for enjoyment and readability. It really needed to be shorter, IMO)

I'll commit to:

The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo

Denise (derickert) | 1268 comments Finished The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James , gave it 4 stars. The Book of Cold Cases is another great read from Simone St. James, the author of the Sun Down Motel. I don’t typically like to read books that jump around in time, but St. James does such a good job of keeping everything straight that it was easy to follow. I also enjoy that her books are spooky without being so scary that I can’t sleep after reading them. Fans of St. James will definitely want to add The Book of Cold Cases to their list.

I read The Sun Down Motel by her, Denise, largely because I needed a horror read for something or other. I *rarely* read horror as it doesn't appeal to me, but Motel was very good. I'm adding "cold cases" to my list. Thanks for the feedback!

I finished my July commitment, Sidney Chambers and the Perils of the Night by James Runcie. It was most enjoyable. 4.0 stars
