2 ~ HOB Olympic Games Q&A

You need to pick one country to represent together. That country's flag will also be your team flag.
You will be playing for points/medals for your country. In addition, each of you will be competing against each other for those medals.

I saw some chatter over whether books would have to be set in the country you choose to represent.....
I'll just say, don't stress over the country or not pick one because you might be worried where that will take you. I gave a little hint, btw. 😉

I am going to go through the threads tomorrow to see who hasn't checked in and start sorting out the countries. Then I'll post the details for the Spell Out, Opening Ceremony tasks, and how to move on to the Medal Events.

So we are each have a country, but how do we determine the books we read. Can you give an example? Would it be all like read a book based in your country about gymnastics? Kind of thing?
The Country will be for each team to represent during the games.
I will provide the tasks for each team as we go, but the tasks will not be country or sport driven. For example, one task could be Read a book whose title starts with a letter in your Country name or Read a book that features an athlete.
Mostly the tasks will be loosely related to the event or sport in some way. It will be much easier to see after I have assigned all the countries and the first Events.

Ah ok thanks :)

How often do we get a prompt? Like how long do we get to read each book?
Say I start a book on 26th and next prompt isn’t to 30th can I use that book for the prompt on 30th
Is there a page limit?
This is how it will work, using the Opening Ceremonies as an example.
The first tasks/prompts to be posted will be for the Opening Ceremonies. There are 4 tasks - for these all have to be completed 2 by each partner. Once those are completed you will check-in to receive the next set of events. We will continue on like this.
The official end of the competitive challenge is Oct 31; the teams can choose to continue until they have finished all the Events or they can choose to end.
The HOB Standard Challenge rules apply; (there is a link to these in the first post of your team thread, under the first spoiler.) The minimum page count for all books is 100 pages. You will receive points for your books based on page count; (link to these in the first post of your team thread, under the second spoiler.)

Everyone can use their own time zone or PST for the start of the challenge.
I will post the ending time for the challenge using PST.

No! The spell-out can be done at anytime from the start to the end of the challenge and it does not have to be completed for you to get points for the letters that are finished.
The only "rule" is that each person can only do 8 letters. (So if one of you wanted to do them and the other didn't, that isn't an issue!) But you do get page points for those tasks too.

I'll allow everyone to start books today for the tasks, but they can't be finished until July 26.
For the remainder of the challenge, as long as the book wasn't started before today, we will go by finished date.
**Posting this to individual threads, so everyone knows.**

Excellent! That makes things a little more flexible than books having to be started after the new tasks are posted. I hate it when I've already started a book that would have work.
Thanks, Angie!

Our flag has three colours can we use these three then one from Olympic rings and do the colours have to be 50%

1. For the spellout can we use a book that we are using for one of the tasks?
2. You have Gail and I listed as competitive. Can we change to non-competitive please? We are doing this to work together and have some fun.

I'm so sorry!! I missed this yesterday.
That is how I had expected it to be in my head when I wrote the task! Using the colors in your flag along with the number needed from the Olympic flag to make 4.
The colors do not have to be 2 from each.

You are not being a pest! Ask all the questions you need!
1. No, each book can only be used once in the challenge. So either a task or a spell out letter, but not both.
2. Oops! I will fix it to non-competitive.

For everyone - A clarification on the task regarding flag colors.
If your country's flag does not have 4 colors (white is a color!), then you should use the colors from your flag and the extra color(s) from the Olympic flag to complete the task.
Examples -
A Country flag with 2 colors would use those 2 colors and 2 from the Olympic flag.
A Country flag with 3 colors would use those 3 colors and 1 from the Olympic flag.
A Country flag with 6 colors would choose any 4 of those.

Thank you
Do they have to be 50% that colour? I have finished a book but can’t access spreadsheet for Great Britain
The colors just have to be on the cover - no specific amount of any color - just so that if I look at the cover, I'll see those colors.
You should have access now.

I'm so sorry!! Of course, give me just a few minutes. I thought I copied all the names from the profiles! I'm sorry, again!!
A note about the Games, from questions I've seen in the threads.
Only the Torch Relay will remain open throughout the Games. This will be the only one that you can change out books on.
Once an event is closed and medals are awarded, it's final. No swapping books after you check-in for an event.

You can read in any order. Just need to complete that set of 4 to request the next one.

Yes, I'll take the word in the subtitle for this task.

Kat wrote: "How do we prove a book counts? Like a rebel character"
Just give your justification.
If you think something makes them a rebel, I'm likely to agree! But, I won't question it unless you give a reason that doesn't fit - like he was all sunshine and roses! 🙂

can some of the letters be in the title and the rest in the author name?

Yes

Yes

Lori and I are in a non-competitive group. Is that why - on the spreadsheet there is not a way for us to put in point values for pages read? I can’t find a way to enter the page count or points from a page count on the spreadsheet.
Thank you!
Hi Gail - no everyone gets points....cause they are fun!
I had the left rows frozen so you could see the bonus items for each book, but you have to scroll on the right side of the page to see everything. I will remove the freeze for you.
