Saar The Book owl | 161 comments I recently saw the trailer for the movie coming out in October and I had already tears in my eyes. My son has a copy and he wouldn't continue, because of the sad parts in it. Maybe I'll join for the read.

Aga | 1066 comments *Gasp* I have to read this!

Meredith | 1775 comments Just started the audio of this today. It is very cute (in a good way) so far. I like the tone and style of the writing (and the audio production). But, apparently there is a map and illustrations in the book, so I'm also waiting on a book/ebook version from my library.

One thing I especially like, considering that this is a middle grade book, is that the readers are often addressed directly, bringing them into the story, and the narrator has said more than once 'our robot' another way to engage them and give them buy-in to the story of the robot.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I reread this, and then finished the series. I wish I were a member of the target audience so I could fully appreciate it. As is, I'm just a wee bit too jaded to give it full marks.

Saar The Book owl | 161 comments My son has the book, but he stopped reading at a particular sad part. I'm going to read it very soon. I've seen the trailer, but my heart broke and then with the music...I won't be seeing the movie, I think, I'm to soft hearted.

I didn't know the book is part of a series?

If it helps it has (view spoiler)

Saar The Book owl | 161 comments Oh, okay, that helps!

Cheryl (cherylllr) I should have said trilogy, not series. But yes, he writes notes in each book that explain he didn't plan it to keep going, but there was more he wanted to say.

Cynda | 184 comments Agree! I have to read this too! I
Since there are visuals, I have ordered a physical copy from local library system.

Cynda | 184 comments I'm glad I waited for the library book to become available. The art is clear and concise & shades of black and white. Since art informs the story, I will go with (for now at least) the art depicting how (view spoiler)

Cynda | 184 comments I spoke about this book at another GR group, describing how good a speculative novel this is, asking us to consider common questions young people ask themselves and might best start asking themselves early. (view spoiler)

Cynda | 184 comments I also listened to the audio. Good thing because I have difficult time hearing computerized speech inside my head. Not necessary. Definitely nice.

It definitely follows the found family trope?

Cheryl (cherylllr) I love your discussion questions, Cynda. I agree, this story explores how Nature and Technology don't have to be opposites or at odds with one another. I'm going to think about that for awhile.

Sign of a good book - plenty still to think about weeks after finishing reading it!

And, yes, Melanie, found family for the win, for the love.

Cynda | 184 comments Yes Melanie it does.

Cynda | 184 comments Like many other readers I read the story on the page and then find how this story applies to my life. I can foresee how I might accept the services of a medically indicated companion robot at some point in the future. I am a sentient being, so I can foresee my developing an attachment much like family love. Children who are mostly tame I am happy to befriend.

Cheryl (cherylllr) I like the idea of a companion robot very much. I recommend Today I Am Carey.

Cynda | 184 comments Today I am Carey looks interesting and even worthwhile. . . .For now at least I will continue on with this trilogy. Next and Now, I read The Wild Robot Escapes ;)
