I'm going to have to opt out this month, sorry. I read about 30 pages of this "essay" and found it far too meandering, dull and straying too far off the topic. If she wanted to show us how she came to her conclusions, she could have done it in a more engaging, less annoying way, I think.
And, when you think about it, her conclusion is simply logical. Writing takes a lot of time and concentration. Women who have 3,4,5 or more children or have to work two jobs or take care of sick or elderly relatives will not be able to write novels. They'll be too exhausted.
Readers nowadays complain that many women writers back in the day were all well-off middle class women writing about well-off middle class women. Privilege as far as the eye can see! Not understanding that it is exactly that privilege that allowed the novels to be created in the first place, as it was ONLY middle & upper class women who had the money, time and freedom to pursue what they wanted.
I don't normally read non-fiction, so perhaps it is me, but I found this book just too boring and self-indulgent to continue.
I hope others in the group don't feel this way and some good convos happen this month!
Understandable Berengaria. I haven't started the book yet - hope to around mid month or the third week of the month - but have my doubts on being able to finish it. I am pretty sure I have read most of it in the past - but never finished it in any of my prior attempts. So plan to set aside a few hours to devote especially to that book and see if I can complete it.

Sorry to be running behind. Hope to start this book yet this week.
Nope I could not do it. I got into the third chapter and had to bail. Just felt like I was reading in circles. Too many words that said absolutely nothing. This is probably the third time I have tried to read this book - and definitely the last time! May be a classic - may be a timeless book - may be an excellent author - but not for me.
Ok guys I picked it back up.I have tried too many time to read this awful book and decided that this time is it. I kept thinking there must be something I am not reading - something that I haven't come to yet - Something - Anything!
My opinion of the book is that it is one thought that she keeps harping on and going around and around and around. I got nothing out of the book. I found it confusing and chaotic.
I can only assume that it is as popular as it is and classified as a classic because of who wrote it. I found nothing to be gained by reading it.
However...I can now say that I have read it...and never have to see this book again!!!

A little about the Book
A Room of One's Own is an extended essay by Virginia Woolf. First published on 24 October 1929, the essay was based on a series of lectures she delivered at Newnham College and Girton College, two women's colleges at Cambridge University in October 1928. The essay examines whether women were capable of producing, and in fact free to produce work of the quality of William Shakespeare, addressing the limitations that past and present women writers face. It is generally seen as a feminist text, and is noted in its argument for both a literal and figural space for women writers within a literary tradition dominated by patriarchy.Adeline Virginia Woolf (nee Stephen; 25 January 1882 - 28 March 1941) was an English writer who is considered one of the foremost modernists of the twentieth century and a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device. Born in an affluent household in Kensington, London, she attended the King's College London and was acquainted with the early reformers of women's higher education. Having been home-schooled for most part of her childhood, mostly in English classics and Victorian literature, Woolf began writing professionally in 1900.
