2. A book with a serpentine element on the cover
"A book with a serpentine element on the cover
To celebrate the Chinese Year of the Snake. Could be a snake, winding path or river, folded ribbon design, or an abstract design element that curves back on itself.

Some other interpretations:
The Serpentine is a modern art gallery in London. Could have a piece of modern art on the cover or something that looks like it would belong in the gallery.
Serpentine is a “dark green or brown mineral with a greasy or silky lustre”. So a dark green or brown cover.

This could be a real country or a fantasy one
4. A book that comforts you
This could be a book that leaves you feeling good, a re-read of a favourite book, one of your go-to authors, in your comfort zone, or a cozy book.

14. A book involving mountains

15. A book related to “civil rights” or “human rights”
According to the US Institute of diplomacy and Human Rights:
Human rights and Civil Rights. Two key terms within the sphere of diplomacy and development which you have probably heard of, but what do they actually stand for and what are the differences between them?
A simple definition is that “human rights” are the rights you have simply for being a human being. Comparatively, “civil rights” are contextual, meaning you are entitled to specific civil rights through being a citizen of a particular country, nation, or state. Civil rights are proclaimed by the government for the citizens of that country, while human rights are derived from natural law and are universally protected and applied.
This could apply to so many books! From my own recent reads:
Wool Omnibus--dystopia
All American Boys--prejudice/discrimination, social justice
The House of Unexpected Sisters--unjustified dismissal from a job
Real Life--prejudice/discrimination
Educated--domestic abuse
The Bandit Queens--domestic abuse
1984—dystopia/constant surveillance
All Boys Aren’t Blue—LGBTQ+
The Thief Lord—juvenile homelessness
The Pull of the Stars—LGBTQ+, criminal revolutionaries

The two that immediately jump out to me are the serpentine cover and the fungi; there's so many interesting possibilities. The rest I'll have to mull over.

Downvotes
Manga- not something I read and after the sci fi fantasy prompt really can’t have another genre I don’t like
Human rights- just can’t get my head round it
Goodreads awards- way too restrictive
Upvotes
Money
Historical figure
Country without monarch
Will decide the other two as I vote

I love the civil rights/human rights prompt as I can think of loads of books this would apply to. Loads of my book involve people/groups who are being mistreated including historical fiction, non-fiction, mystery/thrillers. This is the prompt I’m most excited to pick a book for.
And I suggested the prompt for a ‘comfort’ read, so I’m upvoting that too.
At the moment I’m thinking 5 up votes and 3 down votes.
This year I’m doing a reject’s challenge for everything I upvoted that didn’t get in…it ended up being 58 books once I removed the duplicates so I’m going to try to only upvote things I really want to read incase I do a rejects challenge again next year!!!

I have no idea what I'll do since I don't like either genre ever. Even as a child I didn't like most comic books (just stuff like Archie and probably much of the lure was that we weren't allowed to have them so we'd read "real" books.)

There is Dinosaur Sanctuary, Vol. 1 - a series that is cowritten by a paleontologist and is basically 'What if Jurassic Park were real, but nothing goes wrong'. So it's a look at theories about what dino behavior was like and what it would take to care for them if they were alive.
Then there's books like A Man and His Cat, Vol. 1 or Cat + Gamer, Volume 1 which are just about someone who adopts a cat - so if you like cat videos online , this could work for you (as long as you don't mind endless puns😏)

There is Dinosaur Sanctuary, Vol. 1 - a series that is cowritten by a paleontologist and is basically 'What if Jurassic..."
Thanks for this Kendra. Having alternate types of stories helps, but I still don't love the format of manga or most graphic novels.
Something that's all graphics, where you interpret the story I like, or maybe something like The Invention of Hugo Cabret where it's mostly graphics and a few words here and there, but the standard graphic novel/manga format just doesn't hold my attention. But that's just me.

And I think the connection with 2025 is so clever (manganese is atomic number 25)!!! I just love categories that connect to the year. Merely saying "a graphic novel" loses that connection.
I know some of you are "I know what I like and I don't like that." But in the hopes that those on the fence can be persuaded, let me list a few manga that I think might be more approachable for a novice.
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Vol. 1 - some of you may have seen the gorgeous movie Miyazaki made about environmental disaster - this is where it all started!
Gokushufudo: The Way of House Husband 1 - it's weird, it's goofy, it's over the top cornball, it's fun! (Don't bother watching the anime, it's subpart at best)
My Brother's Husband, Volume 1 - very touching story about love and grief. One of the main characters is American so a lot of this is about introducing an American to Japan, which is what makes it so approachable for Americans (and others).
Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom - yes it sounds violent, yes the demon is drawn to look violent, but this is actually a very clever story about a brilliant anarchist teen.
Orange: The Complete Collection, Volume 1 - warm and touching
Princess Jellyfish, Tome 1 - super sweet story about being an outcast.
Wandering Son, Vol. 1 - compassionate coming of age story
パーフェクトワールド 1 - a romantic story about running into your childhood love, and finding out he's a paraplegic now.
5 Centimeters per Second - maybe you've seen the movie already, it's a love story set just a little while in the past
Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms - about the aftermath of Hiroshima, ten years later
A Silent Voice, Vol. 1 - another coming of age story, about a deaf girl who faces her bully

Two historical fiction mangas I've read for reading challenges, and both are series so I'd likely continue with one of them if this got in:
A Bride's Story, Vol. 1 - a nomadic woman marries and settles into a different culture in life with her husband's family
Emma, Vol. 1 - Emma was born in poverty and becomes a maid in Victorian England, class issues including potential romance

1. A book with a cover that has an image of something that starts with A, T, or Y - I like that this is a different spin on our usual ATY-themed prompt. Most likely an upvote
2. A book with a serpentine element on the cover - I like this, but I've also seen a ton of snake/dragon/serpent variations of prompts over the past couple of years, so I'm a little burnt on the idea. I wouldn't downvote and I'd be fine if it got in, but I don't know if I'd actively vote for it either
3. A book set in a country without a monarch - Tired of geography-based prompts generally, although I like that this is open to fictional countries too
4. A book that comforts you - Wouldn't downvote, but unlikely to upvote.
5. A manga or a book about manga - I like that this is something that hasn't come up very often before in challenges, but the episodic nature of most manga bothers me. I'd want to complete the whole series, and some manga have a ton of volumes. Maybe an omnibus if this gets in?
6. A book involving love - I always love this prompt and I've voted for it before, but it never seems to get through. I'd very likely upvote again.
7. A book involving money – or a lack of money - A solid maybe. I'd need to scout out my options.
8. A book with a fruit or vegetable in the title - I'm doing both already this year for another challenge so I'm not likely to vote for it, but I'd be okay if it got in
9. A book involving a train, plane or automobile - Another one that I'm already doing this year as a multiweek, so not likely to vote for it, but I like the concept.
10. A book about a historical figure - I probably *should* vote for this because I'm trying to read more historical fiction, but it's not my favourite of this batch so I might vote for it if I have an extra one
11. A winner or nominee from GR choice awards 2024 - I know this is not a popular one, but I always love this prompt and can always easily find something that fits. I will most likely vote for it
12. A book published in 2025 - I always have a ton of new releases on my list that I want to read, and I'm lucky enough to have relatively easy access to new books. Most likely an upvote
13. A book related to fungi - For some reason, I don't like this wording as much as the "mushrooms" version I'd seen before. I like this one in theory, but I'd need to see the options
14. A book involving mountains - Not particularly interested. Most likely a downvote, although I definitely don't hate it
15. A book related to “civil rights” or “human rights” - Likely an upvote, although it is a prompt that I have voted for repeatedly in the past so I might save the vote for something different

Since I own I Am a Cat, I would definitely cheat and read that for the manga prompt. Shhhhh...don't tell! 😃

Favorites so far.
2. A book with a serpentine element on the cover. Surprise- I’m putting a cover prompt on my upvote list in week 1. Normally I avoid them due to poor vision. The cover pictures made all the difference for me.
6. A book involving love. - perfect phrasing!! This could cover any type of love. Let’s vote it in early, and get it out of the way before we get a romance genre suggestion. We have the same repetitive long discussions about romance every year. (Please spare us.)
7. A book involving money – or a lack of money. Yes! We need something like this . I could have used it this year. Fiction about financial crime, inheritance, fraud, family money struggles, poverty, politics, business, wills, thrillers, rich characters, poor characters, dystopia. Or nonfiction about personal finance, global economics trends, business, capitalism, etc.
15. A book related to “civil rights” or “human rights” - this could cover a lot of topics. I could have used this prompt this year, for a book about a woman who helps get her cognitively disabled brother out of prison. Plus books on race, refugees, feminism, discrimination, issues in different countries.
4. A book that comforts you. When you hit a reading slump or a stressful time in your life, this can be so nice to take the pressure off, without cheating on your plan.
Rereading favorites can reduce stress. (Psychologists confirmed what some of us already know. )
13. Fungi - this might be our new rabbits. I love seeing people campaign for an unusual topics with broad potential. This is so ATY! I’m on board. Plus I found the perfect book for me.
Prompts:
1. A book with a cover that has an image of something that starts with A, T, or Y - this could hurt my eyes
2. A book with a serpentine element on the cover - yes upvote
3. A book set in a country without a monarch - no interest
4. A book that comforts you. - yes. Great during a slump.

1. A book with a cover that has an image of something that starts with A, T, or Y Yes, definitely - it's a tradition right!
2. A book with a serpentine element on the cover 🐍Yes, like this a lot.
3. A book set in a country without a monarch. Not for it, nor against it
4. A book that comforts you. Hm, I guess it doesn't have to be feelgood but that's what it makes me think of. I don't like feelgood. However, if it gets voted in I'll choose some gastly murders - moahahaha.
5. A manga or a book about manga - well, I prefer watching anime to reading manga. And I'm doing challenges like this to read through my book shelves and I haven't got any manga. I know my sons have manga, probably in my basement somewhere so if it's voted in I'll find something but I won't vote for it.
6. A book involving love. Naah, not my cup of tea, however love can be a mother's love or the love for nature so I'll find something but won't vote for it.
7. A book involving money – or a lack of money. 💷💶 I've got two interesting Swedish books on my TBR, one about the new poverty when the social divides deepen and one about the other side, about the new megarich individuals in my country. So that's an upvote.
8. A book with a fruit or vegetable in the title. 🍍🍓🥑Yes
9. A book involving a train, plane or automobile. 🚂✈️Yes
10. A book about a historical figure - Neither for or against it.
11. A winner or nominee from GR choice awards 2024. Won't vote for this because it takes some time before they gets translated to Swedish so this works better 2026.
12. A book published in 2025. Neither for or against.
13. A book related to fungi. Yes! Of course, since it's my idea 🍄( But by some reason I personally prefer the word Mushroom)
14. A book involving mountains. 🏞️🗻Yes
15. A book related to “civil rights” or “human rights”. ☮️🕊️♀️Oh yes, such an important matter

Comfort books can be whatever you want. A favorite author or a reread might be more appealing when you’re stressed, than a happy book.
For your mushroom list - The Extinction of Irena Rey .

1. A book with a cover that has an image of something that starts with A, T, or Y: This is a fun, creative way of doing this prompt. I am a bit jaded with the title approach.
2. A book with a serpentine element on the cover: This sounds relatively easy for a cover.
3. A book set in a country without a monarch: I will need to do some research for this one, although I am sure that there will be lots of choices.
4. A book that comforts you: I don't do re-reads, but a cozy mystery or a fun fantasy might fit right into this prompt.
5. A manga or a book about manga: I am reading one of the suggested manga now and, although the cover is not enticing, the story is.
6. A book involving love: not my favorite trope but I could find something.
7. A book involving money – or a lack of money: Same response as #6.
8. A book with a fruit or vegetable in the title: Hmm. Yes, I can think of a few that I have read in the past...possible.
9. A book involving a train, plane or automobile: Same response as #8.
10. A book about a historical figure: always a fun search for historical fiction.
11. A winner or nominee from GR choice awards 2024: No.
12. A book published in 2025: Not my choice, but I could find something. Seldom read NEW books.
13. A book related to fungi: Fun and creative. Lots of options.
14. A book involving mountains: possible. I can think of a few I own. Will need a bit of research.
15. A book related to “civil rights” or “human rights”: Yes, just because.

1. A book with a cover that has an image of something that starts with A, T, or Y Yes, definitely - it's a tradition right!
2. A book ..."
Thank you! It seems intriguing, I put it on my TBR.

You are not being too picky. Everyone votes differently.

Surprised to get an option to "Submit Another Response" which took me back to the poll again. We still should vote just once, correct?

Lynn - I actually preferred the manga edition but I still haven't finished the original book. You obviously get more nuance in the original but the manga is a quicker read and the pictures are really cute. Sometimes I just want something that is a light, easy read. There was at least one scene, that was missing some explanation in the manga, that made more sense after reading the book. I definitely recommend reading at least one of them!

Otaku Usa Magazine just posted this article!
https:// otakuusamagazine.com /the-first-ever-american-manga-awards-comes-to-nyc-heres-what-to-expect/

1. A book with a cover that has an image of something that starts with A, T, or Y. I had no problem when this involved the ending of a book, but an object on the cover? Apple, toy, or yo-yos?
5. Manga or book about manga. I don't read, nor an interest, in reading a manga. If this one won, I would broaden, as someone else said, to a graphic novel, although I really don't read those either.

Banana Fish?! Is that related to A Perfect Day for Bananafish?

There was at least one scene, that was missing some explanation in the manga, that made more sense after reading the book. I definitely recommend reading at least one of them!"
Aha! Who told you of my diabolical and deceptive plan! LOL
I'm sure each has its pros and cons. Thank you for the clarification! 🤗

LOL- I totally didn't think of that! I was all focused on non-Commonwealth countries! Although who knows what the US will look like in 2025.
