Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments So far I am enjoying this, but I wish the author has helped develop the cyberpunk setting a bit more explicitly. It's making it a bit difficult to follow the plot when I can only barely undertand the in world scifi references.

I totally agree with this. I started it yesterday (I'm a little late to the party) and I'm having troubles grasping the setting because Gibson makes a lot of in world references, as well as convoluted imagery. I'm glad I'm not the only one who was struggling with this.

Yeah the jargon doesn't let up unfortunately and character flit in and out constantly without getting fleshed out. It makes it very hard to follow what is going on.

I finished this yesterday and . . . yeah . . . it was incredibly hard to follow. I'm not upset that I read it, it was just a very difficult read.

Charbel (queez) | 2729 comments Yeah I just finished this and I appreciate that at the time the concept was revolutionary for the genre; coming up with the concept of cyberspace and essentially kickstarting the cyberpunk genre, but it was not a fun read. I was actually relieved when I finished it.

It's very difficult to follow the plot, the characters were not particularly compelling, and the writing is bogged down by techno jargon that is very rarely explained.

I am disappointed if I'm honest as this was recommended to me by a friend and I really wanted to like it.

spoko (spokospoko) | 158 comments This is so interesting. I’ve read this a couple of times, and really enjoyed it, but I really can’t disagree with any of these critiques. I’m now wondering what it is that I liked so much. It’s been 10+ years since my last read, so I really can’t say.

I completely agree with you. I can appreciate this work in the fact that it was revolutionary for the genre and helped pioneer cyberpunk, but it was absolutely exhausting. I was also super relieved once I finished it and was disappointed because I so badly wanted to like it as well.
