Collection of seventeen short stories written by the multi-talented Tom Hanks. This collection is quite varied in theme and content – we have relationships, family drama, friendship, war, space, time travel, historical narratives, immigration, journalism, bowling, and tales from contemporary society. I found it easy to picture the scenes. These stories have a pleasing arc to them, especially for those who appreciate storytelling. My favorites include: “Three Exhausting Weeks” (a relationship runs its course in the titular time span), “Christmas Eve 1963” (a war veteran spends the holiday with his family while haunted by memories of his WWII experiences), “Alan Bean Plus Four” (a mission to the moon in a homemade spaceship), “Who’s Who?” (a young actress from Arizona, struggles to make it big in New York), and “The Past Is Important to Us” (a man repeatedly time travels to the 1939 World’s Fair). This is the author’s debut, and it will be interesting to see what he writes next.
