Opal is a ten-year-old girl who brings home a stray dog she found at the supermarket. She lives with her father, the preacher. Her mother left them several years ago and she does not remember much about her. This is a sweet story of a girl and her dog. They have recently moved, and Opal has had trouble making friends. The mutual caring for the well-being of the dog touches the lives of others in their small-town of Naomi, Florida. Themes include friendship, community, and healing. It is a book that emphasizes positive traits of empathy and kindness, and also contains a few sad moments. I think it would make an excellent reading experience for middle grade children, and I enjoyed it too.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11072 comments I’m glad to hear you liked it. We liked the film. If there’s a dog in it, it’s a safe bet in my family.

Ann Patchett often recommends her books. I really liked Edward Tulane.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12571 comments This such a classic that has held through time. We had a Children's Booksale at the library yesterday, and we had a lot of copies of it-but apparently not enough-quite a few disappointed kids😔

Joy D | 10090 comments I am not sure how I missed reading it before now. Good to hear it is still loved by kids!

Rose W | 53 comments This book and Edward Tulane and my two favorites of hers!

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11072 comments It’s still very popular and there are holds on it at the library. I tried another of her books today and it’s charming too. Raymie Nightingale
