Silvia Turcios | 304 comments You look like an expert on the subject of Terry Pratcher, so I'll ask your advice: I know The Colour of Magic is the first book of Discworld, should I start reading this series with this book or do you recommend something else as introduction to the Discworld?

I agree with Lauren (as I own all the discworld novels except the last one!). If you read in order, just keep in mind that the 3 first books are not the best and, after them, the stories improve enough to be more pleasant :)
If you decide to read out of order, I recommend starting with the 2 first Tiffany Ashing, continuing with the Witches series and widening with the other books. Each discworld novel is a full story so the out of order is not a problem but it's nicer to know the background of the characters.

- Rincewind is a send-up of high fantasy - a good read if you're easily made cross by the unrealistic elements of GRRMs work or LoTR
- Small Gods is a stand alone novel, but is universally loved by theologians and atheists alike
- Witches is great for young girls, women, fans of Shakespeare and feminists
- The Watch is awesome for fans of police procedurals, RPGs with sprawling cities, and is definately an urban fantasy with a lot of Dickens references
- Death is an all round funny and approachable story, a good send up of Gothic subcultures and more introspective of Pratchett's work. Also good for music fans (can be started with Soul Music) and teachers (Susan Sto Helit)
- Tiffany Aching is a great series for children, young adults, and adult fans of fairytale tropes
