Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

I don't know why, but I'm always surprised at how different a movie is from the book!

I'm on Chapter 118. I'm not finding much to talk about. The author might have gotten a lecture from his English teacher about 'showing, not telling', in my opinion.

I’m almost finished. I have a couple of chapters to go. I agree that the movies are very different than the book. I think they toned down some of the more controversial/offensive parts of the book. The children in the Books are brats and it is clear that in Roald Dahl’s opinion it is the parents’ fault because they always do what the children want. I also think that Roald Dahl has a problem with tv . I do believe that I like Wonka from the book better. He has the enthusiasm of a child.

I'm just starting today. The apartment I was supposed to be moving in had issues with construction so I've spent the last couple of days focused on seeing if something was available at the end of my lease since I've already given notice — a total mess. I'll add to the thread later.

I definitely got the same impression. Could it be that Dahl was making a social commentary rather than sharing a story?

Really don't know if I have so much to talk about. I agree that it feels like Roald Dahl had a problem with tv.
Overall, it was a much needed light-hearted read.
With the brats in the book, I find that Roald Dahl hoped to address certain issues, and I think he did address them while ensuring that the book is enjoyable.

I think Dahl was way too heavy-handed. It would have been much more impactful if he had shown more consequences to the brats' issues.

So, the book I was reading had both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as well as Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. I went ahead and read the whole thing for a different reading challenge.

Wow! The second book was really weird! I'd give it 2 and 1/2 stars.

It's been an adventure for sure!

I agree that there are a lot of hateable children in this book, and parents that seem not to be involved with trying to manage the situations, instead they feed into the bad behavior. Hopefully will finish in the next hour or so after I grab a bite.

Well, just finished this one. I think it was like a 3.5-star book for me. Overall it was enjoyable, and I bet as a child I would have loved it, but with the visions of the movie, it didn't quite live up to the musical world that I so loved.
