Jen K | 3143 comments The Fleishmans are in trouble. Recently separated and still trying to figure things out, Toby prides himself on being a respected doctor (liver specialist), being "there" for his kids and apparently he has still got it based on the multiple sexts and naked photos he receives on dating apps. Apparently though, being a doctor is no longer the coveted job though as he is thoroughly out-earned by the other parents at the kids' elite school and by his ex wife, Rachel, who seemed to chose work over the kids to get them to that social status. When Rachel drops the kids off unexpectedly and goes of the grid, Toby has to face how great a dad and respected at work that he is while still obsessed with the dating apps and trying to reach out to old friends pre-Rachel.

I'm a bit mixed on the book. It is well written and really takes on tough topics of family, relationships and social status in a clever way. But it is hard to hear a well off middle aged white man whine and complain especially in his treatment of women and thinking he is such a great guy. I did have to push myself to finish but I'm glad that I did. The set up of the book is a bit odd with the narrator being one of Toby's college friends going through her own mid life crisis and felt a bit tangential but I understand the need for a bit of a female perspective. It was good and made me think but also entitled and hard to take at times. I felt for the kids.

Jen K | 3143 comments Thanks both! Glad to have great company in the mixed feelings camp. It was good but became a lot.

Holly R W | 3107 comments After reading the book, I tried watching the streaming series. It was too graphic for me. I made it through only one show. I find that there's a certain advantage to reading. It can tone down the "over the top," groan-producing situations whereas film just amplifies them.

Jen K | 3143 comments Thanks for the warning! I don't have much patience for TV anyhow and this just sounds too painful to try. I prefer lighter or fantasy when viewing.
