HOO: The lost hero, leo es el mejor - a deep dive

The book starts off with a bus ride (paralleling the first Percy Jackson book) where we meet our new trio: Jason Grace - a son of Zeus and brother of Thalia Grace, Piper McLean - a daughter of Aphrodite and a famous Native American actor, Tristan McLean, and Leo Valdez - a son of Hephaistos who can control fire!
Leo is the class clown, which means he is one of the best characters you will ever get to read. What I like most about Leo and comedic relief characters in general is that there is a lot to unpack!

leo is my number one character and he is amazing. anyway:
leo is the comedic best friend of Jason Grace and Piper McLean. he’s funny, a hopeless romantic, sarcastic, and can always light up a room (quite literally.) hes depicted as the annoying best friend, BUT we overlook how SMART he actually is. he literally rebuilt a whole DRAGON. he is doing college grade level math at 8 years old. IM IN 8th GRADE AND I CANT EVEN DIVIDE. everyone says: “oh, hazel or jason are the smartest.” NO. ITS LEO. we really really overlook his smarts for his amazing personality.
He hides behind his jokes, but that is just because he doesn't want his friends to see that he is vulnerable, I loved reading his backstory because it is truly tragic that the thing that killed his mother - fire - is the thing that he can control.
He misses his mother and we can see that he blames himself for her death because he thought that he was responsible for it (I hate you, Gaea).
He reminds me of Grover, but is built much better and we can see that Rick has improved his writing.
He is an incredible friend to Jason and Piper (and a third wheel, but I'll be honest - I hate Jason and Piper together, mostly because I am so crushing on Jason, but whatever).
He is (as Charlie said) very smart. He purposefully tries to act dumb, because that way people don't have expectations from him and he can just do his thing.
I loved the way he treated Festus with care and (please don't tell me if I'm right or wrong) I hope he gets a pet in the later books - especially a dog - because he'd be so good with it!

The juxtapositioning between his fear of losing and harming his loved ones and his outgoing, lively self really proves what a great writer Rick is.

Ok so Leo is my all time favorite book crush- he is literally like fmc perfection boiled down into a scrawny Latino guy.
Rick nailed the Latino part by the way! Every time he says something in Spanish it’s perfectly timed and not cheesy.
One thing about Leo is he has so little self confidence and puts himself down all. The. Time. In his head. But when he is around his friends his talks in his fake confidence. This is something I can relate to so much. I love that.
Another thing about Leo is his relationship with piper- literally the only thing that made me like piper. He is such a cute little brother to her and piper obviously cares a lot about him.
Ok one more thing I would like to talk about is his backstory- it’s so sad and literally makes me cry all the time. The fact that he thought is was his fault that his mom died- I can’t. That entire book with gea I wanted to reach in and literally just hug him. He deserves so much more than that.
MINOR SPOIBLERS
Then- his sacrifice at the end. He figured it out. He’s not dumb- in fact he’s actually incredible smart. He knows it’s not Jason- it’s him. He accepts it and he try’s to make the best of it- to make it worth it.
AND THEN CALYPSOOOOO!! Ok he literally treats her like a queen I’m so so sooo jealous- I can’t even 😭😭😭😭
i freaked out when i read that he sacrifices himself. i hope him and jason will be fine.
jason is my no1 book bf atm
jason is my no1 book bf atm

anywayyy
the fact that leo overlooks himself is so upsetting. he is my PRIDE AND JOY and when he talks about himself like that makes me want to QUITE LITERALLY CRY.
did you guys not like the lost hero?? i loved it

i loved jason’s pov but i hated piper cause shes giving me pick me vibes
Did you all like the Spanish?
Anyway, thank you Charlie for this suggestion!!
I will analyse Leo Valdez's character from The Lost Hero.
