For my birthday, I get a book release! A Boy Who Made Music/The Extraordinary Life of Joaquin Rodrigo comes out today in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle editions. (A braille edition is pending.)

This picture book biography follows the Spanish composer from carefree early childhood through the life-altering illness that left him almost completely blind at age three, on through his discovery of classical music and his successful career and family life. The illustrations by watercolor artist Tomasz Mikutel convey the loss of Joaquin's vision symbolically, by changing from color to black and white – with one dramatic exception. It is my hope that Joaquin's story can inspire children to dream beyond the apparent limitations suggested by their circumstances.
