Narrative non-fiction that tells the true story of Oleg Gordievsky, who grew up in a KGB family in the Soviet Union. His parents were trained KGB agents. He and his brother followed in their footsteps. After Oleg’s postings in Europe, he realized the oppression and terror of the Soviet regime and turned into a spy for MI6. He rose through the ranks and was about to attain the top post in the KGB's London operation, when he was betrayed by an unexpected source. It is a fascinating account that contains details of the methods of deceit, psychological impact of living a double life, and particularly, the effects on relationships and family life. Oleg comes across as a man of principle, willing to risk his life for a cause he believes in. It also sheds light on events that occurred in the later stages of the Cold War. Oleg’s attempt to escape from the Soviets is riveting. It will appeal to those interested in the history of the Cold War and real-life thrillers.
