I think the second half is what the author wanted to write, and used the first half to gain sympathy for Tokue. I think I would have had sympathy regardless, but (from the book anyway) I got the impression there is still real prejudice about her condition in Japan.
I feel like I'm missing the point?
I love the first half even if they keep going on and on about the sweet bean paste and dorayaki. However, I love food so I didn't quite mind this part about food and cooking. I am, of course, salivating and contemplating where I can get some tomorrow.
The story took an unexpected turn after halfway or rather, not quite unexpected just that the exact topic/theme was unexpected. And while I didn't mind ending that much, I also feel a little unsatisfied.
