I've been following the book banned news for over 2 years now. This content is finally official and out in the open. The right-wing, Christian fanatics have a game plan that includes cutting funding to public librarians, preventing access to information and jailing librarians and teachers for providing "obscene" content to minors. Several states already have strict laws against books. Utah isn't the only one.

Utah, Idaho, Iowa, South Carolina and Tennessee,
Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana are also moving towards banning books and jailing librarians.

Librarians are sounding the alarm on Project 2025 and the consequences for libraries.

It makes me want to throw up. It's like the rise of the Nazis.

It is exactly like the rise of the Nazis but equally like the rise of Stalinism. And yes, I do tend to now use the word Stalinism for extremist American Social Conservatism, as I do know that labelling Social Conservatives Stalinist (and politically majorly collectivist and left wing) would likely infuriate them hugely while with calling them Nazis, sorry, but I do wonder if that might actually be considered an honour and as something to celebrate and laud.

God I hope not. Stalin killed even more people than Hitler. Nazi has lost a lot of it's power with people using expressions like "grammar nazi" which really upset me because it's not funny and shouldn't be used in such a flippant way.

Anyway, my posts to respond to these things are short because I just don't have the bandwidth to deal with these issues right now. It's just too upsetting.

Yup both Hitler and Stalin were monsters, but the fact is that Stalin in particular is kind of becoming a bit rehabilitated by individuals like Vladimir Putin (and while extremist social conservatives in the USA would probably never openly admit ti supporting aspects of Stalinism, their support of collectivism and their hatred of individual freedom and individualism comes straight from Stalin).

Jessica Calaway (bookenthusiast13) | 3 comments I hate this so much! As a librarian in FL it just disgust me. Thankfully our strong collection development policy helps to hinder and stop challenges and bans in my system.

I think that's the fault of Seinfeld and the "Soup Nazi".

The majority of people who are actually aware of Project 2025 and understand what it means are NOT in favor of it. There are a lot of great activists working for democracy and freedom. Banned Books Week is coming up next week and my Google news feed was overwhelmed with news about the week's activities, even in Florida.

Jessica I feel for you! If you need books or anything, let us know.

I was totally thinking that.

As for Banned Books Week next week, does anyone have any ideas about what we could post about it on the main page? I don't have any time right now and would welcome the help.

I have a summary of information already typed up for another forum:
why books are banned
where you can find lists of banned books
how you can help fight back

I can copy/paste it here.

Jessica Calaway (bookenthusiast13) | 3 comments one thing for banned books week is avoid caution tape chains and similar imagery. People are taking that as a caution you Shouldn't read these. the ALA is suggestion more positive imagery that can't be taken advantage of online.

Excellent point, Jessica. I never thought of either putting the tape up nor the ramifications.

That would be great QN!
