This book is fictional but the settings and observations seem to be based on the author's life. The main character looks white and thinks he is white until he is about 11 years old, when he finds out his mother is Black and his father a well-off white man. Throughout the short book, the unnamed narrator observes the behavior of both races in the North and the South. It has some reference to The Souls of Black Folk, which also has somewhat of a travelogue mixed with sociology. Music is an important theme in this book, as it was for the author, who wrote among other things, the lyrics to Lift Every Voice and Sing, the "Black National Anthem." The story is a picaresque tale, with the hero undergoing dramatic changes in fortune and meeting a variety of people. The ending is a bit ambiguous - does the character make the right decision?
