Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Okay! I'll be the next one to dig at this...

1) I always read a book with hot piping mug of Great Taste Cappuccino.
2) I never start reading without one.
3) I believe that reading is therapeutic.
4) When is all perfectly still, quiet, calm, and tranquil, that's when I'm totally absorbed by whatever I'm reading.
5) I read just about anything I could get my hands on, provided that I'm interested in the subject of the book.
6) I know a few Nihonggo words and phrases that I learned in college.
7) But since I'd graduated, I most probably forgot them.... :P
8) Whenever I'm buying a book, I always opt for the ones that are in good condition, no fold or pen marks on the pages, and no creases in the spine.... that only goes for the paperbacks...
9) Whenever I'm buying a book in Hardcover, I always makes sure that it still have its dust jacket; It's the First Edition (the copyright page is the first thing I browse inside the pages of the book), and most importantly I can afford it.
10) I thoroughly research the books I'm planning to buy.
11) I'm a total Stephen King fan, though I haven't started reading his books..yet.
12) I hate Twilight. (But you already knew that)
13) Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is the thickest book I've read this year.
14) I keep a journal.
15) I haven't read Harry Potter 6 & 7 yet.
18) I plan to collect all of Stephen King's books in Hardcover.
19) I can read a Filipino novel in one sitting.
20) I read Tuesdays with Morrie An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson in one day.
21) I love reading after I woke up.
22) Don't disturb when I'm reading.
23) I might bite your head off.
24) I hate spoilers, so as much I can, I don't read them.
25) I'm easily tempted by anything that's tempting... ^_^

Rhys | 202 comments my turn..

1. I can't read in the toilet. :P
2. I read in 6-8 engrossing hours esp. when i read Sheldon's...
3. I spend a lot of time inside the bookstores because basically i love books and i enjoy picture books.
4. I keep a notebook whenever i read so i can always jot down beautiful lines and dialogues.
5. I also use my cellular phone to save interesting ideas from the book I'm reading.
6. As much as possible, I ignore foods whenever I'm reading.. eating loses my concentration.
7. I'm forgetful. I often go back to the previous chapter or page while reading.
8. I'm not very picky when it comes to genres.. I read anything..
9. I'm currently collecting Cosmopolitan, Entrepreneur and Candy magazines.
10. I once dream of becoming a novelist and I'd realized it's a tough process.
11. I still haven’t read any Harry Potter. I'm not a fanatic so it doesn't bother me much. They are just too many pages and magic. lol!
12. I'm dying to complete Sheldon's novels but hell, one book is something like php359..
13. I read with my glasses.
14. If possible, i want to finish a novel in one-sitting..
15. I've thought about which dream I've wanted for a long time. I want to have a very big library in our house.
16. I'd rather go reading than shopping.
17. I can't read in public transportation. So I think half of my time while traveling is wasted.
18. I have several unread books but I'm fond of borrowing novels to my friends.
19. I feel high whenever i finish a great book. I talk about it.
20. I have a dear brother who loves reading, too. But, he has this irritating attitude, leaving the book anywhere inside the house causing book damages, so I'm thinking of keeping the books myself..
21. I read mornings, noons and evenings and also during the night.
22. I underline words that I cannot understand and look for the meanings in the dictionary.
23. I will probably fall for a guy who loves reading, too..so that we can share books. :)
24. I had started believing that there are extraterrestrial life on other planets when I had read The Beach..Richard is so amazing..
25. The last chapter of the fiction book is the saddest part for me.. well, because that would be the end of imagination..

Ako din! I want one with ladders to reach books on the topmost shelf. :)

message 6: by Maryse (new)

Maryse (belle_maryse) | 151 comments I want to try this too

1. I read whenever I can find time to: during meals, in transit, before sleeping, in the john
2. I don't remember sentences, lines or written words when I read, I only remember scenes...
3. Hence, reading a book is always like watching a movie
4. I love obscure books...
5. So I love Booksale, because where else can you find little known tomes here?
6. I want to own my own bookstore
7. I used to steal books from my grade school library because I couldn't bear to part with them (they caught me and made me pay for it)
8. Growing up, I loved the classics
9. I like collecting books. Just looking at a shelf-full of books makes me happy
10. I hate novels that tell me things straight away. I want to get to the idea myself
11. I usually look for novels of movies I enjoyed watching (ex: Gone with The Wind, The Birds, Fahrenheit 451, Breakfast at Tiffany's)
12. I have a thing for novels from the '50s and '60s
13. I've tried reading in other languages but I've never finished a book
14. I once tried reading "Leben in Galilee" in German and gave up on the first page
15. I prefer short stories to novels. More pack for buck methinks
16. Book covers can entice me to buy a book I know nothing about
17. The only slow novels (those that contain too much detail) I can stand reading are those by Henry James
18. I go through phases. Once I had a French phase and read mostly French books, then a WW2 phase, an African phase, Island phase, etc
19. But my genre of choice is still horror and sci-fi
20. I can't stand most Romance novels...
21. ...Especially chick-lit
22. I don't like over-intellectualized novels as well. Life's too short for that :)
23. I, too, want to be a published author someday
24. I can read with and without my glasses
25. The only books I hate reading are my med school books, but they're the books I need to be reading right now

I give in! Spill away...

1. My maternal grandmother was the only Filipino in the family (literally).
2. I can speak, but can’t read well in Tagalog (I’m working on it).
3. Keeps a journal (for my eyes only).
4. James Patterson is my favorite author.
5. Keeps notes/quotes from books I’ve read.
6. I write with colored pencils instead.
7. Ben 10 is my favorite action hero.
8. But still prefer reading than watching TV.
9. I’m cranky in the morning.
10. Chugs coffee anytime of the day.
11. No food, no music while I read.
12. I read almost anywhere except in my car (that will be the death of me).
13. Prefer e-books when travelling (easier to carry), and ...
14. I have a severe case of OCD; I don’t like folds or creases on my books.
15. I once argued with a bank guard for mistaking my e-book reader for a cell phone.
16. I bawled over the Time Traveler’s Wife at 2am (first time for me).
17. I take photos of books at bookstores, so I can keep tabs which to buy next time.
18. I still keep my Justice League, DC comics from childhood.
19. I love reading at the beach …
20. Staring at my bookshelves always brings a smile to my face.
21. I never learned how to ride a bike.
22. Used to buy Barbara Cartland books from the Salvation Army.
23. Daniel in the Lion’s Den was my favorite story as a child; and still amazes me as an adult.
24. I enjoy sitting inside a bookstore or a library to merely take in all the smells and sights of the books around me.
25. I think goodreads is very addictive.

My maternal gran, by the way, actually came from one of the indigenous tribes of Mindanao and was married to a Spanish Mestizo (my gramps). We are pretty proud of her.

My paternal grandparents are more complicated. My abuelo(grandpa) was a Spaniard while my wai po (grandma) was Chinese.

Although I do have my mom's facial features, I'm mestiza. My siblings and I were raised in different cultures because of the diversities, but my mom's culture of course dominated. After my dad died, mom went back to her mother's native land and chose to live there.

I do love JLA, Jhun. And I would never give them to my brother no matter how much begging he'll do. hahaha

You're so smart, reading in both german and french.

My turn,
1. I read to and from work, during breaks and sometimes while at work.
2. People look at me strangely for reading at the bus stop and inside the bus while standing. If I could get away with reading while walking on the street, I probably will.
3. I once took a week long off from work just to organize my books and read from my TBR pile.
4. I love to read children and young adult books.
5. …though I’m making a point now to read the classics and some literary fictions.
6. I like making lists of anything but mostly about books.
7. I envy Dodie Smith for writing I Capture the Castle.
8. When I was young younger I fantasize about having my own daddy-log-legs (and I don’t mean the spider).
9. … also I thought I’ll be joining the peace corps.
10. I love reading outdoors.
11. I hate starbucks but I don’t tell my college friends I do so.
12. I feel like it’s a crime for thinking Jane Austen is overrated but I kind of think she is.
13. I don’t believe in religion. I worship books.
14. I’m always trying to convert people… to read religiously.
15. I have a thing for Neil Gaiman, not about his books though. I just think he’s hot.
16. I don’t watch television at all and movies seldom
17. … the last movie I saw was Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
18. I avoid watching movie adaptation of books.
19. I like reading phrases/sentences in French aloud just to hear myself speak it. I took French for my foreign language class in college (for two terms), sadly I’m still ignorant to it.
20. It’s not unusual to find two copies of the same book on my shelf.
21. I’m forever looking at video shops for a copy of A Streetcar Named Desire, just so I could see Marlon Brando shirtless whenever I want to.
22. I rather read than go out with friends.
23. I blow my paycheck on books. I don’t spend much on anything else not even clothes.
24. I don’t used to read as much as I do now and it’s sad when I think about all the books I won’t get to read.
25. I try to encourage younger people to read through my blog and by giving away/donating some of my ya books.

message 23: by Lynai (new)

Lynai | 1188 comments Since it's a lazy day at the office, I'll make my own list too.

1. I attribute my addiction to books and reading to my nanay (mother) who used to borrow stacks of Nancy Drew, hardy Boys and Sweet Valley books from the library for me.

2. While in grade school, I would go to the college library to borrow books when I found out I have finished borrowing all the story books at the elementary school library.

3. I highlight all my favorite lines on a book.

4. I do not peel off the price tags of the books I buy. I always feel good everytime I see how cheap my books are.

5. Everytime I'm in a mall, I see to it I get to visit a bookstore (NBS, Booksale, etc.)

6. I am not much of a fan of romance novels.

7. But I really really loved Judith Mc Naught's Perfect.

8. I am a huge fan of Dean Koontz and Lightning and Watchers are my favorites, in that particular order.

9. I don't like reading memoirs, biographies, and autobiographies.

10. I always read before going to sleep.

11. I always carry a paperback inside my bag.

12. I can't read while on the road. I get nauseous.

13. Right now, I'm saving up for The Hunger Games and Catching Fire.

14. I like reading while lying down.

15. I dream of having my own room with floor to ceiling shelves full of books.

16. After finishing a very good book, I am sometimes inspired to attempt to write too. Always it turns out that I couldn't. Tsk. :D

17. Goodreads has expanded my genre of reading books. Now, I enjoy reading books other than the mystery/thriller/crime stuff.

18. I don't like Paulo Coelho and Mitch Albom. Although I agree with some of their philosophies, I still find them entirely lacking something.

19. I avoid watching movie adaptations of books I haven't read yet. Unless I didn't know it was a movie adaptation.

20. Lately, I've been collecting People Asia Magazines.

21. When I arrive at the office, the sites I open first are my yahoo mail, facebook, then goodreads.

22. I can't remember how I "discovered" Goodreads.

23. When I want some light reading, I borrow from my landlady's "katulong". She reads Tagalog fiction. It's good because I get to finish a book in an hour. Hahaha!

24. When reading newspapers, I read the Entertainment section first. Then I just scan the headlines.

25. Goodreads (and this group) breaks the monotony of my office work. :D

Apokripos (apokalypse) | 3321 comments Can also I add some more stuff about me here...

Okay!

26) After I'd bought a book I always peel off its price tag... I think it just spoils the look of the overall book... what I do to remind me how much the book was and when and where I bought it is that I write the title of the book; then if it is in hardcover first edition, paperback, etc; the name of the book author and the price of the book at the back of the receipt.... Been doing this for two years now...And boy, those receipts get thicker and thicker by the day... Blame that on Booksale.... LOlz!

27) Ilove reading self-help/pschology book, business, financial, leadership, and motivational books...

28) John Maxwell and Steven Covey are two of my favorite authors that I like who wrote in this genre...

29) Like Maryse, I always imagine a book like a movie.. Casting my own stars with the exotic places I conjure in my head... and in my opinion makes me an amateur director... which BTW, is my frustrated dream... but no one can really say, huh...

30) I read books twice. First is to get to know the story and immerse and enthrall my self in the book. Then the second is my appraisal and too see how did the author did what he did. Usually here's the part where I look at the whole book with a critical and discerning eye... which also make me an amateur critique and an author who snoops with his competing authors..

26. Whenever I buy a great book, surprisingly,it receives kisses from me..

27. I have few friends.. I enjoy online friends.. Some of my high school friends were lame..why bother?

28. I have this habit of buying books and sadly, they wait for days or even weeks to be read..I need to curse myself for that..

29. Today, I'm currently hunting books in cheaper stores ( supermarkets, to be exact ).. They are selling books in lower prices.

30. The thing that I can't purchase a good book because I'm broke, damn, it really makes me sad. It depresses my whole system..

I have watched the movie and IMO it was one good movie. I kept seeing numerous copies of the book in Booksale but oddly, I didn't feel compelled to buy. That's what watching the movie before I read a book does to me. Just like Memoirs of a Geisha.

I agree with Lynai, Rhys. It seems having seen the movie beforehand somehow overcame my interest in reading it. It was a beautiful movie, though. And I have a huge crush on Jude Law.

Aaron Vincent (aaronvincent) | 2053 comments I'm bored so I decided to give this 25 Things About Me a shot.

1. I read for fun.

2. I don't seek for moral lessons or social significance in each book I read. If a book really does possess one, you don't have to search for it. It will just show.

3. I love reading fantasy books. Lets me visit places man doesn't usually set foot onto.

4. I go straight to Powerbooks or National Bookstore first when I go to malls and spend hours browsing through books.

5. Once, I hunt 5 malls in one day just to get my copy of Michael Grant's Gone.

6. I love my books so much that I put lotions first in my hand before opening it. Resulting to my bookshelf being lotion-scented.

7. Since I'm a programmer, I manage my own database of the books I read and books I will read. And its more convenient to use than the Goodreads bookshelf.

8. I don't intend to sell that system. Its for my personal use only :)

9. I love listening to Muse, 30 Seconds To Mars and Panic at the Disco while reading books.

10. Reading is not only my obsession though. TV and Films have also their own shares for my leisure time.

11. If a book is really compelling, I can lock myself in my room the whole day.

12. I noticed publishers are desperate to published something that is like Twilight that even the bull crap YA novels has been published lately(i.e. Hush hush, Evermore etc..). They don't realize that Twilight itself is not an awesome book.

13. Thus, I believe that quality of YA novels have deteriorated since Twilight.

14. Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games set my standards for good YA novels.

15. I usually lose my sense of time while reading.

16. I tend not to read too much "intellectual" novels. Life is too short to be dead serious.

17. Im not a fan of books with too much big words.

18. Sometimes I admire villains that is downright evil. They make the story more interesting.

19. Most of the time, I end up just reading a book in one corner in parties and family reunions. I just raid the host's bookshelf to find a book to read.

20. I read books which I'm not sure I would like in weekdays while the books Im sure that it is awesome on weekends.

21. When I like a book I would really like it. I will keep babbling and raving about it.

22. But if the book just wasted my time, I keep on bashing and dissing it.

23. I keep the plastics(in the case of Powerbooks, Paper Bags) of the books I bought, and if I but more than one I ask them to have them in individual bags. When I lend them to my friends, I tell them to make sure that its on the plastic or paperbag when they are not reading it.

24. I read first the reviews on Amazon before deciding to read the book.

25. Suprisingly, I find myself now spending more time in goodreads than on facebook.

I hope this could inspire the new members of this group to state their 25s too.
