Buddy read for Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender, starting August 19th, reading 5 chapters a day

Okay I've finished the first 5 chapters. So far I'm liking it, but the dialogue feels a bit weird to me? Forced maybe? I'm not too sure how to describe it, just feels a bit off. I'm actually curious if you feel the same or if it's just me lol

Finished the first five! I didn't notice anything about the dialogue, but now that you say that I'm going to pay more attention haha. I did notice that there's a ton of swearing, which, i'm fine with occasional swearing but it seems a bit excessive here...idk.

I'm really curious about what's up with Declan. Like why did he suddenly get all hostile for no reason if they all used to be friends? Excited for what's next!

Oh interesting because I didn't notice any excessive swearing lol. But then I have no problem with swearing. I'll keep an eye out.

I feel like Ezra is the bad guy here to be honest... Something happened in that relationship he didn't tell Felix about... Maybe that he's in love with Felix? And Declan called him out on it?

I've finished the next 5 chapters too and the dialogue between Felix and Ezra still seems so surreal to me. Like surely people don't actually talk that way lol. Whereas the dialogue between Felix and Declan seems perfectly normal to me.

okay finished ch. 10, and i totally see what you mean about the dialogue now. like when they were in the park, i found it weird.

ooh i feel like you might be right about ezra being the bad guy. also, is this going to end up as a love triangle between felix ezra and declan?? i can't really tell if ezra and felix like each other or if they're just really close friends.

the party scene (at ezra's apartment) was a bit weird to me, like when everyone was talking after it kind of felt like the author was being a little preachy like would actual teenagers talk like that? but idk that could just be me.

to be honest, felix kind of annoys me, i'm not sure why.

i am intrigued about what comes next, and how felix and declan's online relationship will progress!

Yes idk the dialogue feels so weird to me. Like she's trying to be all poetic about gay stuff but it just comes out forced to me? And also like all conversations with Ezra focus about being queer. Of course it's a huge part of your life, but really, every single one? Idk it feels too forced to me. Also the privilege stuff. Yeah that needs to be addressed but somehow I doubt the conversation as it was written would actually be one that would happen. And the same with the party scene, like you said. This book is too forced/preachy and not just a book about a teenager trying to find his identity. Which is a shame because I really wanted to like this book but so far it's looking like 3 stars for me... (and I've finished chapter 15 this morning)

I really hope this won't become a love triangle... honestly so far I'm rooting more for Declan than Ezra lol, there's something about Ezra I don't quite like, I just can't put my finger on it. I do think it's possible Ezra likes Felix, I don't think the same for the other way around. I have a feeling at the end it will be Felix and Declan in a relationship and Ezra being left behind because he was an asshole or whatever.

Felix doesn't really annoy me, only the way he talks lol

Do you have any ideas on who put the gallery up? I didn't really until I started writing this comment then thought what if it was Ezra... but that would be diabolical

Yeah it totally does feel forced. And I'm also rooting for Declan; I mean he is nice over text. I feel like something is going to backfire with Felix using his real number to text Declan, like, someone's going to figure it out soon. I really want to know what went down between Declan and Ezra. I honestly have no idea who put the gallery up. It's probably not Ezra... BUT WHAT IF IT WAS?! That would be insane. I'm gonna finish the next 5 chapters (through 15) when I get home today and will update then!

Oh for sure someone will figure it out with Felix. He wasn't exactly thinking very well when he made that account lol. I also want to know what happened between Declan and Ezra because clearly something happened... I still think it could be that Ezra is in love with Felix lol

Okay omg I finished chapter 20 too. Idk I guess I felt it coming? At least he wasn't the bad guy to Declan I suppose. But I'm kind of scared for Felix now, he's feeling like everyone is his life has abandoned him and the fact that earlier in the book they were talking about (view spoiler)[ suicide (hide spoiler)] rates within the LGBTQ+ community... although I feel like if this were that kind of book it would be known before going into it

i don't think ezra doesn't love felix anymore like felix thinks, i think ezra's feelings just got really hurt so he needs some space. hopefully declan forgives felix? i mean felix kind of brought that upon himself with his whole convoluted revenge plan lolll. i really hope that felix and his dad talk at some point. their relationship is so confusing.

Oh no I agree, you can't just switch off love like that... and if you can it wasn't really love. I also hope Declan forgives Felix, but yeah you're right it is kinda Felix's fault... The relationship between Felix and his dad seems the least forced thing in this entire book lol

I've finished. I'm not satisfied with the ending but I'll wait until you're done too to discuss. I ended up giving it 3 stars, I really wish I could have liked it more

It didn't end how I thought it would; I really thought Felix and Declan were going to get together. I was also not suspecting Austin of putting up the gallery at all. I think I'm going to give it 3 stars as well. What were your thoughts?

I completely agree with you. I'm really not too big a fan of Ezra; idk what it is but I would have preferred Felix ending up with Declan. I didn't think it was Austin either, but it also wasn't a satisfactory answer I feel like? Like it came completely out of left field for me. I gave it 3 stars because I didn't feel like the writing was great, especially when it came to the dialogue, and the plot didn't really make up for that either

I thought the story had a lot of potential, but like you said before it was too preachy, and also the characters didn't make me care about them enough to be that invested in the story.
