After five unsuccessful Seasons on the marriage mart, Miss Adelaide Duveen has resigned herself to the notion that she's destined to remain a spinster forever--a rather dismal prospect, but one that will allow her to concentrate on her darling cats and books. However, when she inadvertently stumbles upon Mr. Gideon Abbott engaged in a clandestine activity during a dinner party, Adelaide finds herself thrust into a world of intrigue that resembles the plots in the spy novels she devours.

Former intelligence agent Gideon Abbott feels responsible for Adelaide after society threatens to banish her because of the distraction she caused to save his case. Hoping to return the favor, he turns to a good friend--and one of high society's leaders--to take Adelaide in hand and turn her fashionable.

When danger surrounds them and Adelaide finds herself a target of the criminals in Gideon's case, the spark of love between them threatens to be quenched for good--along with their lives.

Everyone is welcome to join Michelle and Bridget in this coming Buddy Read!

Bridget | 437 comments I am about half way through the book. I really like this one. I like all of the character so far.

Michelle | 622 comments I'm getting ready to start chapter 9. It's a fun story. I look forward to finding out how the Patriarch Ball turns out.

I know Camilla's ball will be the one where something happens. There's almost always a ball towards the end where something unusual happens.

Bridget | 437 comments I just finished. Adelaide and Gideon are so cute. I like how Adelaide is her own person and not caring about society. I like her concern for others feeling slighted by society and, of course, her love of cats and desire that everyone would have their own cat to love too.
Looking forward to reading Book 3 about Camilla.

Michelle | 622 comments I finished! I also liked Adelaide and Gideon as a couple and how Adelaide was her own person. She does not let the expectations of society change who she is. I think it's great that her collection of cats was about rescuing strays and finding a home for them. Over all I liked the book.

I was wrong about Camilla's ball. That one didn't happen in this story.

Parts of the business with the cipher doesn't make sense. Why is the cipher to be picked up by Lottie instead of the guy who opens the safe? Why is a person who steals the cipher able open the safe? This part wasn't explained. I assume without a key it is difficult to decipher, especially since experts at the firm couldn't decode it.

Bridget | 437 comments Yes, that was a but confusing. All the criminals involved were hard to follow.
