When the Martials came and conquered the Scholars, they formalized that relationship as themselves as leaders and the Scholars as defeated slaves. The system is ingrained and oversaw by the Masks who are trained from age 6 at a martial academy with its brutal curriculum. Elias was snatched at age 6 from a carefree life in the desert to find that he was from a line of brutal Masks. He is among the best at the academy but never quite felt comfortable with the role of the Masks and the violence. Laia lived a relatively good life in the Scholars quarters but has already lost so many in her life. When her brother is arrested, Laia is forced to make tough decisions to try to save him. At the same time, there are some major shifts happening in the empire foretold by the Augurs and lives are at stake.

The story is a bit brutal but I like the characters and they fight to save not only those close to each other but also the leadership of the empire. There are lots of behind the scenes scheming to work out and I'm very interested to see how it will all work out. I appreciated the school and trials. Love triangles are not my favorite but interested to see how it works out.
