1. Location
This awe-inspiring landmark stands on the Giza Plateau located on the west bank of the Nile in Egypt. Along with the nearby Great Pyramids, it attracts millions of visitors from around the world who come to marvel at its grandeur. Facing directly towards the east, it is positioned perfectly for the rising of the sun on the day of the spring equinox. Others say it was aligned to face the constellation of Leo. Either alignment shows the ancient Egyptians’ intricate understanding of astronomy.
*Read a book with the sun pictured on the cover (post cover) OR read a book that has one of the following words in its title: GREAT, EAST, SUN, or SPRING.
2. History & Excavation
The early history of The Great Sphinx has puzzled historians for centuries. But archaeological evidence suggests that it was created around 2500 BCE for the pharaoh Khafre, the builder of the Second Pyramid at Giza. Buried under layers of sand for many centuries, its head was uncovered during Graeco-Roman times. The first modern archaeological dig occurred in 1817, supervised by the Italian explorer and Egyptologist, Giovanni Battista Caviglia. He uncovered the Sphinx's chest completely, revealing its complete form to the world.
*Read a book with over 2500 reviews on its GR homepage (4229 Reviews)- Whose Body? by Dorothy L. Sayers-1/22/25
OR read a book with TWO of the following numbers found in its total page count: 1, 8, 1, 7 (share page count).
3. Size and Construction
This incredible statue has the distinction of being the world's largest monolithic sculpture ever carved from a single piece of stone. Made of limestone bedrock from the same quarry that provided the stone for the pyramids, it measures 240 ft (73 m) long and 66 ft (20 m) high. The front paws were built from separate blocks of limestone. Some estimate that it took hundreds of workers at least three years to finish the sphinx using nothing more than stone hammers and copper chisels.
*Read a stand alone book- Keepers of The Wisdom Daily Meditations: Reflections from Lives Well Lived by Karen Casey-12/31/24-
OR read a book with a character who works in a field that uses hand tools (tell us who).
4. Representation
The Great Sphinx depicts a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human, prominent in Egyptian, Asian and Greek mythology. The Egyptian sphinx is depicted as a male with a Pharaoh headdress, believed to represent Pharaoh Khafre, with the lion body symbolizing his strength and power. This is different than the Asian and Greek sphinx, which is usually female and includes the addition of eagle wings.
*Read a book that mentions a mythological creature (share text) OR read a book by an author whose first and last initial can be found in THE GREAT SPHINX.- Can You Forgive Her? Volume II by Anthony Trollope-12/21/24-
5. Appearance
It was not always the dull sandstone color we see today. Evidence suggests that the sphinx was once painted in vibrant colors, emphasizing its regal appearance. Its famous missing nose has led to numerous explanations and legends. Contrary to popular belief, Napoleon's cannonballs were not responsible. A series of 18th-century drawings suggests the disappearance of the nose happened long before that.
*Read a book with a vibrantly colored cover (post cover) OR read a book with all the letters of NOSE found in the title (any order).- Santa Fe Mourning bAmanda Allen- 10/22/24-
6. Purpose
Despite extensive research and speculation, historians and archaeologists have yet to uncover the true purpose of the sphinx. Being positioned in front of the three largest pyramids in Giza leads to the belief that it served as a protective guardian for these ancient structures. Its imposing presence may have been intended to ward off evil spirits or serve as a symbol of royal power and authority. Or it may have simply been built to honor the pharaoh, whom they believe was responsible for its creation. It's original purpose may never be known.
*Read a series book #3 OR read a book where someone "protected" an important character is some way (tell us how).- A friend of an investigator protects her source (at at least tries to) in Déjà Dead by Kathy Reichs-10/1/24-
7. Secrets Beneath
Nestled between the paws of the statue lies the Sphinx Temple, a small chamber dedicated to the worship of the sun god Ra. It most likely played a vital role in religious ceremonies during the time of the pharaohs and could even be the secret behind its purpose. But for centuries, people have speculated that there are other hidden chambers and passages beneath this great structure that have not been discovered or explored. If so, maybe they hold hidden treasures that would unravel more secrets about the sphinx and ancient Egyptian civilization.
*Read a book where a secret or something hidden is important to the plot (briefly share details) OR read a book tagged MYSTERY on its GR homepage.- Auntie Poldi and the Vineyards of Etna by Mario Giordano-11/14/24
8. National Pride
This monumental landmark continues to captivate the world with its grandeur and mystery. It holds a significant place in the hearts of Egyptians, standing as a testament to the extraordinary achievements of the their people. It is a source of pride and an iconic symbol of their ancient heritage and cultural legacy. It is this historical significance that contributed to the Giza Plateau, including both its sphinx and pyramids, being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.

*Read a book with over 2500 reviews on its GR homepage OR read a book with TWO of the following numbers found in its total page count: 1, 8, 1, 7 (share page count).
*Read a stand alone book OR read a book with a character who works in a field that uses hand tools (tell us who).
*Read a book that mentions a mythological creature (share text) OR read a book by an author whose first and last initial can be found in THE GREAT SPHINX.
*Read a book with a vibrantly colored cover (post cover) OR read a book with all the letters of NOSE found in the title (any order).
*Read a series book #3 OR read a book where someone "protected" an important character is some way (tell us how).
*Read a book where a secret or something hidden is important to the plot (briefly share details) OR read a book tagged MYSTERY on its GR homepage.
