Bopeep (bopip) | 1088 comments It's been a while since I posted here (I needed a book break!), but I wanted to be present for Fright Night.
I've read the monthly message with the books and it was a surprise to see this one, so... here I am!

I've read the first two chapters and I'm curious about the story. All this tea and poison... I need more!
(Will this "Shadow" be the love interest? Hmm)

Ski | 5 comments I’m so glad to have an excuse to read this book; I’ve had it on my shelf for about two years and kept putting it off.

Jen K | 1547 comments I read this basically in a day at the beach over the weekend. It was engaging but the cliffhanger killed me. Not sure when I will get to book 2. Happy to discuss if others finished or currently reading.

Bopeep (bopip) | 1088 comments I've finished the book today!
At first I didn't like it, it was too young-adultish. But after the second round of the competition, I loved the descriptions of the tea and food, and I kinda grew invested on the plot.
Like Ning, I was suspecting everyone, not knowing who to trust. At first I thought Lian could be a traitor, but I'm glad she isn't? We didn't know after that ending, though :/
But the important thing... is Kang really against the princess? He let them escape.

Maybe I'll read the next one soon to not forget about this one.

Similar feelings. I did really enjoy the descriptions of the magic, teas and food as well. Was really hoping to read the next soon as well but I'm not sure if it fits any of the Fright Night tasks.

Bopeep (bopip) | 1088 comments I had to wait for the doctor (nobody knows when they will call) so I downloaded the second one lol
And there's Kang's POV in this one! I'm curious if he was with his father from the beggining or he was dragged. His first chapter doesn't mention anything about that, but it seems he was there from the beggining.
This second one seems more like an adventure to save the country than a beautiful competition as the first one.

From the prompts: there is a snake on the cover, and maybe it's considered a POC author? I always struggle with that prompt :/

YES! So reading soon then if there is a snake on the cover (blaming my bad eyes as I thought a snake would be appropriate). I know if I don't read it now, I won't manage later.

Will you finish before October or do you want to buddy read?

Bopeep (bopip) | 1088 comments I haven't read much, I'm on chapter 3^^ We can buddy read, yes! I think there will be a lot to share on this one.

Awesome, will move to the BR thread if you haven't already.

Ski | 5 comments Just finished the book and man were those last couple chapters a ride. I don’t know what exactly I was expecting but it wasn’t that. But overall I enjoyed the book. I liked the character relationships/dynamics; as well as how the plot itself is paced.

Bopeep (bopip) | 1088 comments I agree! I didn't expect so much actions and treachery on the last chapters, but it was a nice plot twist.
Btw, Jen and me are going to read the second book in October, you're welcome to join us if you want, Skiliey!

YES, please join in! That ending requires a timely read of the sequel. I didn't quite expect to all go down as much as it did. Excited to see how it all works out!
