Sue | 2718 comments This book follows a small group of German soldiers in WWI. They went to school together, enlisted together, and trained together. When the story opens, they've been fighting in the trenches for a while and are well on their way to being hardened soldiers.

The war is shown through the first person POV of Paul Baumer. Through Paul's narration, the author shares the brutal battle scenes, the horror of living in the trenches, and the psychological changes the young men go through just to survive the moment with their sanity.

Truly deserving of the label "classic".
