Original, insightful and modern re-write of Huckleberry Finn, told from the first person perspective of Jim. Nominated for the 2024 Booker long list
While the themes are heavy, the prose moves quickly, using satire to score points. In the end, the character reclaims his voice and his name.
One of the author’s earlier books, Erasure, was the basis for last year’s movie, American Fiction.
4.5 stars rounded down.
