LibraryCin | 11681 comments Set (and published) in the 1920s, Clare and Irene were friends and ran into each other after they hadn’t seen each other in a long time. Beyond this, I had to read the summary on GR to get an idea of what was going on. They are both black women and one of them (I can’t remember which) was passing for white. Apparently (based on the summary I read), the one passing is married to a racist man who doesn’t know she is actually black.

I listened to the audio and obviously, wasn’t paying close enough attention to even know what was happening in the book. It didn’t (obviously) hold my interest at all.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 74 comments I read this one by literally turning the pages of a book. I don’t know how I found the time to do so. I was on the edge of my seat. Passing was a Very dangerous thing to do back then. Penalty could mean death.

Robin P | 5742 comments There was a TV version a few years ago, but to me the actresses were too dark for the part. Yikes, that might sound racist, but I think one point of the story is that someone can look totally "white" even blond with blue eyes), yet have some Black ancestry and there's always the chance a child might have more of that appearance. Or someone will reveal their secret.

Unfortunately, since I wasn't really paying attention, I think I only "got" how long ago this was set when I heard that day once, about 3/4 of the way through the book. Plus, when I read the summary and saw the publication date. Wish it would have held my interest more.

I think some of the editions indicated that there was a movie or tv show from it. I wonder if I might have like that better?

LibraryCin | 11681 comments I didn't pay close enough attention. Could this have fit for "sad"?

I looked a bit through the "shelves" and didn't see it, but there are 100 pages of tags, so I only went a little way. It looks like 1 person tagged it "sad" on LT, but I wasn't really sure if it fit since I missed most of what happened in the book.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8414 comments I thought it was a fantastic book and my F2F book club group concurred. So much to discuss. Loved that ambiguous ending, too.

Dosha (Bluestocking7) Beard (bluestocking7) | 74 comments The ending gave us a lot to talk about too, BC.
