Retellings are a new version of a story that is based on or inspired by a fairy tale or myth that draws heavily on fairy tale tropes. Retellings are distinct from actual fairy or folk tales in that they are contemporary, novel-length, or series-length stories with complex plots and characters. Sometimes, a fairy tale or myth may be reimagined with a modernized setting or retold from a minor character's perspective.

Fractured Fairy Tales change the original story often extensively, resulting in a new lesson or moral more in keeping with the social and political ideas of the time.

Myths are stories that are based on tradition. Some may have factual origins, while others are completely fictional. But myths are more than mere stories and they serve a more profound purpose in ancient and modern cultures. In a sense, mythologies were never simply tales: they always contained within them thoughts and musings that sought to discover something new about the human condition.

High fantasy or epic fantasy takes place in an entirely fictional fantasy world. The stories are often lengthy involving multiple characters and large-scale quests where the fate of the world rests on the shoulders of the heroes.

For the purposes of this group, we will include Portal Fantasy in this category.

Low Fantasy takes place in the real world, or something very like the real world and includes magical or supernatural elements (“low” does not mean this is a lesser or poorer form of fantasy). Characters often discover secret magical forces or supernatural creatures within their supposedly normal surroundings.

Urban Fantasy is generally understood to be a low fantasy set in a real-world, modern, urban society (or something closely resembling one).

Original Tales are fantasies not based on traditional tales but rather are from the author's own imagination.

Fairy Tales are a type of short narrative that typically features such folkloric characters, such as fairies, goblins, elves, trolls, dwarves, giants or gnomes, and usually magic or enchantments.

Fairy tales are high fantasy based on stories that are not only not true, but that couldn't possibly be true, while Legends are sometimes perceived as real or plausible. Fairy tales may merge into legends, where the narrative is perceived both by teller and hearers as being grounded in historical truth. However, unlike legends and epics, they usually do not contain more than superficial references to religion and actual places, people, and events; they take place once upon a time rather than in actual times.

Fabels, Folktales, and Legends will be included in fairy tales.

Cheryl (cherylllr) | 166 comments Have we done anything with The Princess and the Pea story? I have no idea if there are any adaptations that aren't picture-books, but if there are I'd sure like to take a look.
