After the detective's (Amir?) comments about the djinn and sex, I imagine Fatma dead panned hahaha
I did read the first chapter on the right date, but very close to the end I fell asleep...oops. I'm gonna try and read at least the other two that were planned for the first day. By how things started I'm afraid I won't follow the plan.
From the first chapter I can say that I like the writing.
From the first chapter I can say that I like the writing.

I'm on chapter 2 eight now, so don't worry about not following the schedule haha

I like that it's a steampunk fantasy based in El Cairo, being one of the most important cities in the world; that there's some unofficial cult to the Egyptian Gods, but also other religions; the mistery of the case and the magic in it.
I love Fatma with her suits, Siti and her madness?, and I love Haida, I'm sure she will be so sweet and cute. I like the point of view of women in a city that's developing feminism, and how they respond to the men XD.
But at the same time I'm sad because I don't get all the references and I'm not sure which ones are true and which are fantasy :( I would love to know about that too <3
I'm on chapter 6 and, for now, there was a lot of information but little action. I'm pretty sure it will start now. Is the murderer really Al-Jahiz? (I love that sentence of "thanks, Al-Jahiz", it's a referenece to "thank Obama" meme, am I right? haha)

To believe that all women are defenseless is something that men think, but I was disappointed that Fatma thought that about Hadia :C
I like the book but this little things show that a man wrote it.
I'm of course behind on reading because games are far more interesting than reading. Oops. But also because I thought you weren't reading, or at least commenting, in the thread so I was okay don't HAVE to pick it up...yet. However, even though I commented in the thread it didn't notify me about the activity.
I read chapter 4, and will read ch 5 too. That's how much will to read I'll manage.
I still stand behind the liking the writing. There's just something that sits right with me. It's not too descriptive, but describes the story well.
Generally I like books set in middle-east for some reason, it could be the mythology that it has, that is always interesting to me no matter whose mythology is told. Mixing the old world, early 1900s, with magic is so interesting to me plus it's not hidden magic because everyone knows of the djinn's existece.
I have to say that I was surprised when Siti appeared, not by her appearence, but the kissing and the relationship. I guess I haven't been expecting it so it came a bit as a shock to me. So many things ahead of its time if we compare it to our world.

The writing is awesome and I like that each chapter is a scene so I know where it would finish.
Middle-east mythology is awesome, and the author's writing is usually poethic and descriptive. And yeah, the mix of age and magic is so cool <3
I didn't expect it neither, but it's not that I'm complaining :eyes: In this El Cairo, women can vote while in the UK can't, so yeah, they're far ahead of our world!
Though sometimes they... undersestimate women. I will tell you more when you get to chapter 14, because I know things that I know and Fatma doesn't get because of that underestimating.

I wanted to start the group read, and as you didn't make any update... But please, comment as you read! I still want to know your opinions about this, especially chapter 11/12 and 28!
No problem, I'm sorry I've been a catastrophic buddy.. I thought I would be able to read, plus the book is interesting and I like the writing, but I just can't make myself pick it up even in those moments that I do have free time. Let's hope I pick it up and finish it, will let you know.
