2024 Oct - Dec: The Unforgiven by Alan Lemay

I'll be reading it this October. It sounds a very different kind of Western. I was deeply impressed by 'The Searchers,' also by Alan le May, and 'The Shootist,' by Glendon Swarthout, which was recommended here (thank you), and which is probably the most unusual of all Westerns!
Mbuye I will be reading it as well. Glad you are joining in!
I actually at first thought it was the book based off of the Clint Eastwood movie but it is not at all.

Well, I haven't seen the movie, so my impression will be on the basis of the book alone. I wish I had seen the movie, you seem to have liked it!

Mbuye it is not that movie at all!! Unforgiven is a 1992 American Western film produced and directed by Clint Eastwood. It stars Eastwood himself, as William Munny, an aging outlaw and killer. (no "The" in the title)
It is a different older one of the same name that this book is based off of:
The Unforgiven is a 1960 American Western film directed by John Huston, and starring Burt Lancaster and Audrey Hepburn. Filmed in Durango, Mexico

Bad News: The novel took ages to get up and running, and when it did, it just dragged. The first "real" plot point was at 34% of the book! I had to read a lot about the landscape and cattle drives to get to something interesting!
Good news The fear of indian attack on Rachel Zachary's home and family jolted me awake.
The author's imagination takes the reader in the middle of a horrfic "battle to the death" between Rachel and her brother Andy against the Kiowas warriors. I must admit it was a white-knuckle read!
Personal: The story did get better. I read this for a reading challenge...otherwise I don't think I would have pulled this book off the shelf. But it is always good to get out of one's comfort zone.
Book for...Western Pioneer Adventure buffs!

There is a 1960 film of the same name, directed by John Huston and featuring Burt Lancaster and Audrey Hepburn, is based on the book.
Alan LeMay was an American novelist and screenplay writer. Le May was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1899. He went into ranching in California, but the economic upheavals of the ’30s forced him into bankruptcy. Luckily, he had his literary career to fall back on.
With over 11 novels, 5 short story collections, over 75 uncollected short stories, and 19 screenplays, he is most remembered for two classic Western novels, The Searchers (1954) and The Unforgiven (1957).
