Jason (jasonr) | 43 comments I'm sure most of us are aware that the BookDepository.com site is now defunct and no longer viable as a source site for verifying valid book additions (data and/or cover images). As such, it would be nice to have a replacement added to the Librarian Manual.

I'd like to suggest that as a replacement we adopt the ISBNDB via isbndb.com. It's known as the "World's largest book database" and indeed, it appears to be. It's a phenomenal website with fast and easy search, and provides the most updated and accurate info for tens of millions of books worldwide. I think utilizing the ISBNDB database would be an excellent replacement since BookDepository is no longer with us.

Thanks.

Jason (jasonr) | 43 comments Well ... maybe not. I just realized that after several searches, ISBNDB is now asking me to register. Though the free version still provides excellent info.

What about OpenLibrary.org as a valid site source? It appears to be associated with Archive.org, which is considered acceptable, so could OpenLibrary be acceptable as well for book data/images verification? That would be a good replacement for BookDepository.

Thanks.

Javier (palchetti) | 30348 comments OpenLibrary was rejected in the past for legal reasons (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Li...). I'm not familiar with the other website.

Anyway librarians are volunteers, they cannot assist you with issues regarding policies - and the GR employee that usually monitors this forum is on leave. You'll need to use the Contact Us link on the Help page, or submit an idea.

Jason (jasonr) | 43 comments Ah, definitely don't want to step into any legal mire. I wasn't aware of that situation, thanks for the info.

I'll reach out through the appropriate channels for the site suggestions. I'm thinking ISBNDB and ISBNSearch.org would both be valuable sources, so I'll toss that idea in the mix and see how it goes.

Thanks for the guidance!
