Lea (leaspot) | 3629 comments If you're interested, feel free to join us in reading Prophet's Prey: My Seven-Year Investigation into Warren Jeffs and the Fundamentalist Church of Latter-Day Saints

This is a little bit about the book.

From the private investigator who cracked open the case that led to the arrest of Warren Jeffs, the maniacal prophet of the polygamous Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints (FLDS), comes the page-turning, horrifying story of how a rogue sect used sex, money, and power disguised under a facade of religion to further criminal activities and a madman's vision.

Despite considerable press coverage and a lengthy trial, the full story has remained largely untold. Only one man can reveal the whole, astounding truth: Sam Brower, the private investigator who devoted years of his life to breaking open the secret practices of the FLDS and bringing Warren Jeffs and his inner circle to justice. In Prophet's Prey, Brower implicates Jeffs in his own words, bringing to light the contents of Jeffs's personal priesthood journal, discovered in a hidden underground vault, and revealing to readers the shocking inside world of FLDS members, whose trust he earned and who showed him the staggering truth of their lives.

Prophet's Prey offers the gripping, behind-the-scenes account of a bizarre world from the only man who knows the full story.

Hi Linda, I was thinking of starting the week of the 11th. I do read pretty fast. I can be flexible too! :-)

Well, I’m not really a fast reader, but I should be able to start around the 11th as well.

OK, I will start just a little bit later, so we can discuss. :-)

Ioana | 2122 comments I'm reading it now. Not my first book on this topic, but it still makes my skin crawl...

Lea (leaspot) | 3629 comments I'm a little less than halfway through, and it also makes my skin crawl. What other books have you read, Ioana?

I've read:

Escape
Under the Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith
Lost Boy
Stolen Innocence
The 19th Wife
Shattered Dreams: My Life as a Polygamist's Wife

It upsets me that there are so many books on this topic.

Having driven through and gotten chased out of the Short Creek Community myself on the way to the north rim of the Grand Canyon, it breaks my heart to see the abject poverty where people are living. I wish we could rescue them all, but most of them have no wish for a rescue. :-(

Ioana | 2122 comments Whaat? You got chased out of the Short Creek Community? Did you know at the time you'd be passing through?

I read #1 and #2 on your list above, and The Witness Wore Red: The 19th Wife Who Brought Polygamous Cult Leaders to Justice

I have a few others on my TBR, but I need to space them out. This is too painful to read about. It's understandable they don't wish to be rescued, they don't know that everything they were taught and told their entire life is a lie...

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 192 comments I started this one today, just a little. I’m at Chapter 4, and was so shocked at chapter 3, how they just took over Ross Chatwind’s house, split it, added another structure and deemed it a duplex! Who does that!!!

I’ve wanted to read more on this topic and have several of theses on my list. There is just never enough time!

Yes, I absolutely knew where I was going both times I've been to Short Creek. However, my husband had no idea what we were doing the first time we went there in May 2002. He was so surprised. It was also before Uncle Rulon had passed, and that time, we were not bothered when we went through town. The second time, was in October 2020, (yes during Covid) and since we had heard that there was a female mayor who had left the FLDS, and that they were seeking tourism, we didn't think it would be a problem. We were camping in Kanab and had visited Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park. We were starving and Short Creek was closer and we were interested so we decided to go again. We stopped at the Dollar General, and asked the clerk where we could get a sandwich. She told us that we should go to Kanab, that there was nothing here for us. We disregarded her advice and decided to drive into town to see if we could find evidence of this new tourism that was supposed to be endorsed, but that was not our experience. Three dark SUVs converged upon us as we drove further away from the highway and they all turned on their lights and drove up on our bumper. The car behind us was pretty much on our bumper and they escorted us out of town. We ate in Kanab instead. Since that time, I understand that my experience in October 2020 is very much outside the norm. There is a winery in the town that opened in 2021 and is supposedly reasonably good.

I want to read The Witness Wore Red: The 19th Wife Who Brought Polygamous Cult Leaders to Justice also. But, I completely agree, I cannot read too many of these books at the same time. It makes me so angry. I have been adjacent to a few religious cults in my lifetime, and known people who got sucked in, so I'm always interested in books about these things. It's scary. And maddening. And heartbreaking when someone you love is being compelled to do something for the sake of their salvation that is completely wrong.

It's unbelievable how much money and energy is spent on what I would consider general pettiness. The only objective is to obtain and retain power. It makes me sick.

Yes! I have Church of Lies, Breaking Free, When Men Become Gods: Mormon Polygamist Warren Jeffs, His Cult of Fear, and the Women Who Fought Back, His Favorite Wife: Trapped in Polygamy, and The Polygamist's Daughter on my list to name a few. I'm sure there are more.

I have to say that reading the book by the private investigator Brower is a different voice than I normally read in a book about the FLDS.

I had no idea that the company that made the faulty O-Rings that caused the Challenger explosion had Rulon Jeffs on their board. Mind. Blown. I'm in absolute shock.

Right? I complain all the time about the curriculum being taught in our schools (i.e. what is important to know for future vocation, etc.) but I am certain that what is being taught in most of our public schools is vastly superior to what was being taught to the FLDS students in Short Creek. And that spills over into what gets manufactured. :-(

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 192 comments Exactly Lea, I don’t have any children but I do have nieces and nephews and it makes me nervous on a daily basis.

Ioana | 2122 comments Lost Boy is on my list too. Linda, let me know if you want to buddy read it.

Lea, you were brave to ignore the "there's nothing for you here" advice/warning/threat. It's been 20 years since our Utah national parks trip, and I remember passing through Kanab, but we stayed on the highway. I would've freaked out to be chased out of the town like that. Phew!

You know, I expected trouble the first time we went and all we got were some weird stares. I guess I was lulled into a false sense of security with that and the fact that there were articles written in 2018/2019 where they were trying to increase tourism. I kind of figured the FLDS had dispersed, so imagine my surprise when something happened. I wanted to pull over and see what would happen, but my husband wanted out of there. The first time we were there we had a beat up old pickup truck, so maybe the car fit in better. This time we had a red SUV. And people aren't supposed to wear red. Even though Warren Jeffs often rode in a red SUV. I think there's a story as to what was really going on that day, but I don't know what it might be.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 192 comments Lea, I would have been right with your hubby and would have gotten the heck out of dodge!!!

Yes! I definitely want to read Lost Boy, I had already added it to my TBR and searched my libraries for it.

Yes. These families don't need protection from outside influences, they need their family members not to hurt them.

Linda Boyd (boydlinda95gmailcom) | 192 comments Man, it has taken me forever to finish this book! 🤦🏾‍♀️ I’m definitely interested in reading more books on this topic. But this was a hard book to read. These poor people who are being manipulated each and every day and they just stay and do whatever the prophet tells them, handing over their daughter’s over to these old men, sending their sons out into the world alone, it’s just so heartbreaking.

Yes! They don't need the prophet to protect them from the world. They need the prophet to stop hurting them!

It is truly heartbreaking. Do we know anything about the new prophet?

Lea (leaspot) | 3629 comments Ioana wrote: "It is truly heartbreaking. Do we know anything about the new prophet?"

My understanding is that now that he is able to communicate with the faithful, they are back with Warren Jeffs, who has been wrongfully convicted, in their view.

Other potential leaders at one time were -

Lyle Jeffs - brother to Warren, also arrested and in prison for some years, although I think he's out now

Billy Jessop - was named prophet initially by Warren when Warren was arrested, but they have had a falling out

Merril Jessop - died

Wendell Nielsen - I think he's still in prison

I also think Warren has served 18 of his 27 years, so many people think he'll be back soon...I shudder...
