Let's have a scavenger hunt! We're looking for common household objects on the book cover. What exactly counts as a common household object is up to you but we've got a lot of lists to help you brainstorm.

Denise | 524 comments I think I'll read because I won't get around to it this year due to prompt filling:

Joanna G (joanna_g) | 352 comments I discovered this year that I think I confuse Ann Patchett and Anne Tyler in part because of these two books:

The Magician's Assistant by Ann Patchett The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler

So this year I plan to read them both. One will fit here, and one in A, T,Y object on the cover, both for the same reason (armchair).

We'll see if reading them both helps distinguish them or just confuses me more!

LeahS | 1360 comments I'm reading Extinctions by Josephine Wilson and also have Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore (Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, #1) by Robin Sloan pencilled in - there are two small ladders on the cover.

However, if I see a clearer cover, I may well swap.

Wendy (wendyneedsbooks) | 393 comments I read The Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz which features a knife and pencil on the cover:
The Word is Murder (Hawthorne & Horowitz, #1) by Anthony Horowitz
I picked this one up because I really enjoyed the author's Magpie Murders, which I picked up last year for the cozy mystery category, not expecting much, and was pleasantly surprised. While I did enjoy this one too, I didn't like the quirk of "author as narrator" here as much as I liked editor Susan Ryland in Magpie. My full review can be found here.

LOL! I was just going through my books, and I realized I have A LOT of books with swords on the cover! :)

I also have Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire - my version has a broom on the front.

I also have Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil by Hannah Arendt - my version has a picture of him with headphones on.

Mel | 177 comments The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
Since there's a broom on the cover of The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches, I'm going to count it for this prompt. (There are also books on the cover, which I think for most of us count as very common household objects!)

LOL - yes - I think in this group that is a VERY common household object! :)

message 25: by Kathy (new)

Kathy E | 3308 comments I read a classic which was popular at the time it was published in 1850, The Wide, Wide World. It's tagged Christian Fiction like many novels at that time. I liked the story of the young girl Ellen, who lives with relatives and friends when her mother is sick.
There's a table and tablecloth on the cover.
The Wide, Wide World by Susan Bogert Warner

Samantha | 1563 comments I started Sandwich and Margo's Got Money Troubles but for some reason just couldn’t get into either so decided to read a few short stories.
The Bad Friend by Caroline Kepnes The Other Side of the Road by Andrea Bartz and The Reunion Dinner (Busybodies Collection, #2) by Jesse Q. Sutanto . All three were great.

message 27: by J (new)

J Austill | 1116 comments I read Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King for this prompt, as this prompt was an easy fill toward my goal of reading all of King's work.

@Samantha -
I had a couple false starts with Margo too. I don’t know why. The third try was a charm and I loved it.

I like your short story approach. They are perfect for me too when I just can’t get into a book. It’s like a snack or an “amuse-bouche.”

message 29: by Dubhease (new)

Dubhease | 1152 comments I read Mooncakes, a cute graphic novel. It has a mixing bowl, plate, and oven mitt on the cover.

Nancy, Your amuse-bouche analogy for short stories is perfect! I am also happy to hear you enjoyed Margo after your first go. I think there is potential but that wasn’t the time for it.

message 31: by Robin H-R (new)

Robin H-R Holmes Richardson (acetax) | 956 comments I read:
Strong Suspicions (Sophie Strong Mysteries #1) by Amy Renshaw Strong Suspicions by Amy Renshaw

REJECT: A book featuring a circus, amusement park, or fair

Finished: 05/31/2025
Rating: 4 stars

Set in 1912 Milwaukie WI, a young female news reporter finds herself caught up in a murder investigation. Great characters. First in a series.

message 32: by LeahS (new)

LeahS | 1360 comments I read Greetings From Jamaica, Wish You Were Queer by Mari SanGiovanni and Extinctions by Josephine Wilson . I enjoyed the scenes in the first book involving the MC's family, but I thought the romance scenes were less successful, and the love interest too perfect, the major problem too easily resolved. But it was a good, light read for this prompt, whereas the second book was much more serious. Objects did play a large part however, in the story of a man surrounded by the wreckage of his life. Very well written.

message 33: by Phil (new)

Phil | 126 comments I read What You Are Looking For Is in the Library by Michiko Aoyama for this topic (Read July 4th; 3*) The cover has a cup of coffee, pot plant, books & a cat What You Are Looking For Is in the Library by Michiko Aoyama

Tracy | 2978 comments I read and enjoyed Family Family by Laurie Frankel. It has a staircase and a potted cactus on the cover (and now that I think about it, I have NO idea why these are on the cover... unless they represent the turns in your life when you experience a prickly situation?)
