The story opens with the abduction of a young girl. Did you think at the time the setting was in the present? Did you reflect on this scene anytime later in the book?

I thought the scene was in the past. Sister hanging sheets on a clothesline was what I based that on. But in rural areas people could still do that. I just felt past for this scene. I thought of this scene often throughout the book.

I thought this was from the present. It was in the back of my mind for the book.

At first I thought present. Then when we kept getting Ramona’s perspective, I instantly knew she wasn’t Isabelle, but, I couldn’t figure that those snapshots were from the past.

I thought it was the present, too. As the story progressed, I realized it had to be in the past.
