Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19203 comments It’s been a year. It continues to be one. If you are like me, you have a pile of good intentions sitting next to your bed (and desk, and front door, and couch…) glaring at you for not reading them this year.

Let’s get another thing off our list. This is the Loose Threads challenge where I want you to read something you really intended to read this year for whatever reason and just have not gotten there yet. Is it for a challenge, YLTO or otherwise? Is it because you promised the person who recommended and/or leant you the book you would finally get to it in 2024? A series you swore you would finish in 2024? Is it one you just personally promised yourself that 2024 would be the year?

This is the chance. Tidy up one loose thread in terms of your books for 2024 and have my permission to feel a little smug about it, as you achieved it. We all need that feeling right now, I think.

General Rules:

1. The book may be in any format - paperback, ebook, audiobook.
2. The book may be combined with the Year Long Challenge and the Group Themed Read.
3. The book must be read between November 1 - November 31, 2024 (based on your local time zone).
4. The challenge is for one book. You may read more books if you chose but you may only report one.
5. The book must be 175 pages or more determined by the issue you read.

In the case of ebooks & audiobooks, use the hardcover or paperback edition to determine page length. From the book page, select “all editions”, then select the first paper edition as your guide. If reading an ebook and there is no paper edition, the ebook book must be at least 250 pages. If reading an audiobook and there is no paper edition, your book must be a minimum of 6 hours long.

Scoring

Length
5 points - 600pp and over
4 points - 599-500pp
3 points - 499-400pp
2 points - 399-300pp
1 point - 299-200pp

Reason for Reading in 2024
4 points - For a YLTO challenge
3 points - You promised someone you would read it this year
2 points - For another challenge other than YLTO activities (I know, favouritism)

Kristie | 19131 comments Oh, I can definitely use this! I will take a look at the list of books I planned to read and choose one later. I'm off to bed!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments Love it! I have a few that would fit. I might go with Lolita, but there are many other options.

Sharon Hopper | 2417 comments There are SO many choices! I have good intentions…but there are always more books to add! LOL!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19203 comments I'm thinking one of the following at the moment:

For my random around the world picks for 2024 I still have
Snowblind or The Darkness for Iceland or HHhH for the Czech Republic to read.

On my books I was going to finally read this year coz my BIL has been recommending forever list is Cloud Cuckoo Land and either The Nickel Boys or The Underground Railroad.

So not sure where I will end up.

Kristie | 19131 comments I have plenty of options. My first thought is that I'll read either Something Wilder, which I originally planned to read for the Game On challenge in September, or Carolina Moonset, which I received for review in 2022 and somehow still haven't gotten to even though I really want to read it.

Janice (jamasc) | 59873 comments I've decided to go with The Dark Mirror. I bought the three books in the trilogy July 2021 and was so keen on starting the series right away. Four years later... they're still unread.

I can fit this into my hiking challenge this month so that's a bonus for me.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments For a while I've been trying to read only books that I own. I think if I could read only books I own for a year, that would have a serious impact on my shelves. It's impossible. It seems I can't stay away from the library.

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments That will be a difficult choice. I've got lots of loose threads as I look at my physical shelves. Making a choice will be very interesting.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19203 comments Oh, my shelves are a mess. To help, let me stress again - these are books you promised/told yourself you would definitely read in 2024.

Not sure if it does help, but there is no way I can read all the things I have in a year and but I usually look at books at the beginning to middle of the year and go "yeah, this is the year for you" (and then never read it).

Heather | 202 comments I love this challenge! I will chose Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones. It has been on my list forever, and I can use it for my YLTO challenge! Yay! Thanks for the added incentive! :)

Kristie | 19131 comments Too bad I started Funny Story a few days too early. It was on my list of top priorities for this year. Not for any reason, just because I wanted to get to it.

message 14: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19131 comments Ok, I've made a decision for on book for this challenge. When I start the year, I make a list of 12 books that I really want to read and plan to read during the year. Somehow, I always end up reading books for book clubs, challenges, and reviews and I don't think I've ever read all 12.

This year I started a bullet journal and I wanted to make a fun page for my top books to read this year. It ended up with 22 books on it. I am happy to say that I finally read 12 this year, lol. (Funny Story was my 12th.)

I decided to use one of the remaining 10 books for this challenge, since these were the books I most wanted to get to this year when I started the year. After figuring out which books I have immediate access to (7), I decided to narrow it down further by choosing one over 400 pages so I can use it to complete my yearly challenge. This left me with two options. One of those books is included in the Choice Awards poll, so I decided that would be my pick.

TL;DR - I will be reading Just for the Summer.

I'm excited to get to this one. I pre-ordered the book and it's been sitting on my shelf and I've never read anything by Abby Jimenez before.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19203 comments Yay! Sounds perfect, Kristie. And you only needed to nearly double the list to finally get your 12 read :P

Fingers crossed you enjoy Just for the Summer!

message 16: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19203 comments I also made a decision after trying really hard to find a link between my last challenge book and the 4 I listed above. Found a link and am going to read Snowblind

Perfect as I am in the mood for a crime read and it's been really hot and muggy for the past couple of weeks (it's not even summer yet!) so a Nordic Noir set in the deep snow on the edge of the Artic Circle sounds perfect.

message 17: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19131 comments Haha, I know, Rus! I couldn't just read the 12. I needed options.

message 18: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11259 comments I've decided to read INTO THE WILD for this one.

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments @Sandra: I'm curious on what you will find of the book. I had other expectations from it.
