lowri (gcse hiatus) (laddamswilliamsgmailcom) | 393 comments it's not that I didn't like the lost hero, it's just that son of Neptune was AMAZING

Hello, campers! Gather around the fire as we try to figure out why most Riordanverse fans prefer the second Heroes of Olympus book over the first one.

We are going to analyse 3 things:
a) the plot
b) the characters
c) the ships
And tell you what I think.

a) The Plot
The Lost Hero introduces 3 new characters: Roman demigod Jason Grace, brother of Greek demigod and Hunter of Artemis Thalia Grace, and two Greek demigods - Piper McClain and Leo Valdez.
We find out that Jason suffers from amnesia and that his past is a hazy blur, the trio is sent on a quest to free Hera who has been taken hostage by Gaea and her followers.
In their journey, they learn that monsters whom were known to be in Tartarus had escaped and were wandering the streets of big US cities.
They also have to free Piper's father who had been kidnapped so that Piper would betray Jason and Leo.
We are back at Camp Halfblood and friendly faces make surprise appearances, but they do not linger long as our trio must go on the quest.

While The Son of Neptune introduces plenty of new characters, the book focuses on three characters in particular - our beloved Percy Jackson, and two Roman demigods: Hazel and Frank. They are sent on a quest by Mars (Ares) and they must go to Alaska in order to free the god of Death, Thanatos. We learn that Jason wasn't the only one who lost his memory as we follow our favourite half blood struggling to remember his life after Juno (Hera) stole his memories.
We are in completely new settings, leaving Long Island behind and settling in sunny California, though we are not going to stay there long either as we must venture in the land where the gods have no authority.

While both books are interesting, The Son of Neptune focuses on action more than it's predecessor did.

b) The Characters
The Son of Neptune has an advantage, that is that it's main character is Percy Jackson, a character already loved by fans. We have Nico di Angelo and Tyson again on our pages. Annabeth and Grover even make an appearance. All 5 characters are fan favourites, so readers are bound to prefer the second installment over the first.
But other than that, The Son of Neptune introduces us to new complex characters. Hazel Levesque was a dead daughter of Pluto (Hades) from the '40's, that escaped the Underworld when Gaea started to control its gates. She struggles with both her past self and present self and she feels guilty because she woke up Gaea's son.
More on, we have Frank Zhang , a son of Mars whose life depends on a stick. He is sweet, funny, caring and Canadian (I'm neither American or Canadian so can someone explain all the Canada jokes in both books and movies?)

The Lost Hero loses by a landslide.
While I personally loved Jason Grace (he is my favourite Riordanverse character) most people dislike him because he is not as interesting as Percy Jackson. I've actually talked about this in the deep dive "Why a son of Poseidon as a main character was unexpected and drew readers in" , but having a son of Poseidon as a main character would be much more interesting. To say something I forgot to say in that deep dive, in the ancient myths Poseidon was much more reckless than his brothers. So, his son would be reckless. It makes sense doesn't it? His son would be more interesting that the son of a shallow god who was chaotic.
The main difference that makes Percy more likeable than Jason is their discipline. Percy is the sea, he cannot be restrained. Jason, on the other hand, is the sky. He is more balanced. While there are lightning storms, he's more disciplined than Percy. He was abandoned as a child, he grew up raised by wolves and his ambition and discipline got him to be praetor of Camp Jupiter. He trained to become a skilled fighter. But Percy is the sea. His fighting skills come to him naturally. He is unstoppable in battle without much training.
Piper drags The Lost Hero down even further. She is "not-like-the-other-girls", she hates make up, dressing up, girly stuff and she hates that she's Aphrodite's daughter. Her chapters were so hard to read.
Leo is fighting, but he's outnumbered. He is one of Riordan's most complex characters. He is the class clown who seems as though he has not a single care in the world, but he is actually falling apart on the inside. He quickly became a fan favourite.

c) The Ships
The Lost Hero is bruised and battered. It cannot compete anymore.
We had the main pairing of Jason and Piper, who was way too forced and not even entirely real. And Percabeth crumbs with Annabeth being worried sick about Percy.

The Son of Neptune thrives once more with Percabeth - Percy not remembering anything other than the fact that he has a girlfriend, Annabeth, that is poetry, thank you; Frank x Hazel (idk their ship name because I'm trying not to get spoiled too much in case Frank dies in the later books as he is destined to, but a girl can hope), Hazel x Sammy and Reyna x Jason (I can't wait to get to the next book, I can just imagine the drama between Reyna and Piper).

So, we have a winner. The Son of Neptune.
Sorry The Lost Hero.

My opinion
I'll be honest, I liked the Lost Hero just a little bit more than the Son of Neptune for one reason and one reason only does TLH win in my books - Jason and his backstory. It was so interesting and I cried. Twice. He's my boyfriend, y'all. I got attached. I love him. I hope that after HoO, he goes to University and gets married and has kids and has a happy life because my boy suffered so much in his childhood. HIS MOTHER abandoned him and left him there to die???? His sister saw him after YEARS and barely spoke to him then left him alone???? I don't like Piper, but if she makes him happy, I'm rooting for them. Just give Jason a happy ending, please.
I randomly think of his backstory and cry. And now Percy will probably return to CHB while he is still Praetor and like what about Jason???
Sorry for this rant.
Anyway, The Son of Neptune wins.

See you all next time with "percy vs magnus vs carter - a deep dive". I'll try to keep it as spoiler free as possible:)

I feel like it just me but I wasn’t the biggest fan of son of Neptune and I really like the lost hero (not trying to offend anyone btw) I really loved Leo’s pov because he made the book super comedic and also love Jason and piper (not as cute as percabeth but still very cute). The Son of Neptune was a little slow for me because I really wanted to see an Annabeth and Percy reunite - anyone feel the same?

Annie C | 237 comments I actually like Piper I mean she’s probably my least fave out of the seven girls +Reyna but like I still like to read her chapters. However, they were boring sometimes.
