I finished Cleopatra's Dagger today and rated it 3 stars.

This is the second of two books I've read this week set in the 1800's. Both are set in New York City. I like the courage of the Main Character. Elizabeth is the only female reporter at the Herald. In 1880 there are very few telephones, definitely no computers and only wealthy New Yorkers have indoor plumbing. Telegrams and newspapers are still a common method of timely communication. Several red herrings were woven into the plot that I felt were a bit distracting.

I am so so so disappointed in this book. Major TW incoming.

What started as a very interesting premise dissolved into poor writing, confusing half-finished plots and one-dimensional characters.

(view spoiler)[ Worst of all was the absolutely out of nowhere sexual assault scenes that was obviously added because the author couldn’t fathom their audience relating to a female like Elizabeth unless she had some disgusting backstory to make her also a victim. The scene and it’s implications was sloppy and disrespectful to real victims of assault. Absolutely horrendous. (hide spoiler)]
