“Figure out where you’re going before you go there.”

My first John Updike novel and the first of four in the series. The third and fourth books each won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.

The book was more difficult to read than expected, which is not a reflection on the quality of the prose.

The story centers on a restless protagonist, struggling with the responsibilities and transition to adulthood after a celebrated high school basketball career. He is already married with one child and another on the way but comes across as a Peter-Pan man child, reluctant to grow up, and keen to pursue a life of purpose and meaning, trusting in a higher power despite the costs to those around him of his actions.

I will likely continue the series, and curious to get to the later books. 3.5 stars rounded down.
