MissKittyMeow | 9 comments I guess it depends on what flavor of dystopian you are looking for. Here are a couple of my faves, classics, and on my TBR as recommended by, well, everyone.

Swan Song Post-nuclear epic, battle between good and evil in the aftermath- My personal favorite distopian, one of my top 10 books
The Road - this is on my TBR
World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War Mockumentary coverage in the aftermath of zombie apocalypse
The Passage Post-vampiric plague, last remnants of humanity's struggles- Another on my TBR
I Am Legend Post-viral apocalypse that turns people into vampires - Another one of my top 10 faves
The Long Walk Dystopian battle-royale-esque competition, last man standing in distance endurance contest

Jim | 99 comments Two great books from the 1950s are must-read classics, in my opinion: I Am Legend and On the Beach. (Btw, the original film version of On the Beach starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire (in a serious role), and Anthony Perkins is a masterpiece). And there's one of the earliest post-apocalyptic stories (1912) by Jack London, The Scarlet Plague.

The Road is fantastic, but its literary style may not be for everyone. I second The Passage -- great book.

Earth Abides is I think one of the most realistic depictions of societal collapse and rebirth of sorts in the aftermath. It's not very hopeful, but way less depressing than On the Beach.

A couple more recent favorites of mine is The Girl with All the Gifts and The Silence.

Elizabeth (elizabethlk) | 20 comments If you enjoy apocalyptic fiction that focuses on human interaction, the breakdown of society, the building up of communities, etc, I highly recommend Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice, and its sequel Moon of the Turning Leaves.

Yes! It came out just last year (five year wait between books), and it's fantastic.

Nick Mason | 9 comments “Cell” by Stephen King is a pretty decent read. Actually, it was probably the first King book I read. The ending is kind of meh, but everything leading up to it is really good.
